気がつけば10月も半ば、年末を意識し始める季節となりました。
息子は6ヶ月で10キロを超え、順調です笑。ヨーロッパ旅行を抱っこ紐で乗り切った我々もいよいよpushchairの導入です!
という事で、本日は会話練習用のダイアローグの第八弾です!
1. Providing directions to a visitor from overseas
Local (L):
Hello.
Can I help you?
Visitor (V):
Thank you.
I’m trying to find the Imperial Palace.
L:
Certainly.
It is actually quite close to where we are currently standing, which is just outside the central Marunouchi exit of Tokyo Station.
Please cross over that intersection over here and go straight ahead for two blocks.
At that intersection, look right and you will see the outside of the Imperial Palace and security around it several hundred meters down the road.
V:
Thank you.
That’s very helpful.
2. Dialogue on an International Flight Between a Passenger and Air Hostess
Hostess (H):
Welcome aboard, Sano-san.
Your seat 32C is seven rows from here on the right.
Passenger (P):
Thank you.
Is it the aisle seat?
H:
Yes, it is.
I’ll come and check on you once boarding has been completed.
P:
Thank you.
I have some questions I’d like to ask you.
(a bit later)
H:
Hello again.
Is everything O.K., Sano-san?
P:
Yes, thank you.
Please tell me when dinner and breakfast be served on this flight.
H:
Dinner will be served in about an hour and breakfast will be served two hours before we arrive in Seattle.
We’ll start serving dinner drinks in a few moments.
3. Dialogue between a ground attendant in and a transit passenger
Ground attendant (GA):
Welcome to Seattle Airport.
How can I help?
Transiting passenger (TP):
I’m Junko Sano from Japan and I need to catch flight UA383.
GA:
Please let me check.
UA383 to Montreal departs from gate 75 at 6.15 p.m.
TP:
Thank you.
Where is gate 75?
GA:
Please go past the Burger King restaurant you can see over there and then turn left.
Gate 75 is about 400 meters from that corner on the right.
TP:
Thank you.
I have about four hours before I need to be at gate 75.
I’d like to use that time, firstly, to catch up on some emails and, thereafter, to have a relaxed light meal at a good-quality café.
Can you please, therefore, advise where I can find a computer work-space which has good wi-fi available.
In addition, please suggest a good café to me.
GA:
If you look over there just beneath the clock tower, you will see a a computer work-space “keyboard” symbol.
This terminal has high-quality wi-fi throughout.
A good café is Eat-Up, which is about 100 meters on the left once you have turned the corner past Burger King.
文法ポイント:
英語には、自動詞と他動詞の両方で使える動詞が多く存在します。例えば、to breakです。壊れると壊すには、syntaxに違いはあれど、semanticに違いはありません。しかし、to tryの様に、semanticsに違いが生じる場合もあります。要注意です。
発音ポイント:
rowsは/rəʊz/で、roadsは/rəʊdz/です。どちらも最後の音節は有声音の子音です。
zは「ず」で、dzは「づ」ですから、異なる音です。
zは摩擦音、dzは破裂音と摩擦音の混合です。
現代の日本人には発音の違いを感じる事が難しい思います。
よって、先ずは無声音で練習しましょう。
zを「す」で、dzを「つ」で発音し、そこから徐々に「ず」と「づ」に近づけると効果的です。
