ヨーロッパでは、11月の中〜下旬からクリスマスマーケットが始まります。

今年は円安の影響で、冬休みの帰国を見送っている日本在住者が殆どです。代わりに、皆、家族や友人を日本に招いていますから街は例年以上に賑やかになりそうです。宿泊施設の価格の高騰は避けられないでしょう、、、。
一方、日本からアメリカやヨーロッパへ進学(9月入学)を検討している学習者達は、第一次書類選考がスタートしました。現在、先生と共に願書の作成と提出に大童です。合否の発表は提出から1〜3ヶ月後(大学によって異なります。)です。引っ越しも考慮すると、将来的に海外進学を検討されている方々は、秋口から準備を始めるイメージを持って下さい。

Hello.
My name is Megumi Nishiyama.
My daughter Sayuri and I have just arrived from Osaka for a two-week visit to the U.K. to sightsee and catch up with some old friends living in various parts of the country.
LR:

What can Cellular Abroad do to assist you?
MN:
I’m afraid we haven’t made a reservation or anything but, when we were checking in at Kansai International Airport in Osaka, we noticed some foreign visitors to Japan hiring rental phones for the duration of their visits to our country.
As using my Japanese phone while overseas is very expensive, we thought then that it might be a good idea for us to do the same thing while we are in the U.K.
Can you please tell us about the phones you offer.
LR:
I’m sure we can help you.
We have some options.
The simplest and cheapest would be to rent a SIM card and put it in your Japanese phone.
That may, however, result in some additional charges being levied by your Japanese mobile phone provider.
MN:
I’d prefer to avoid that possibility.
I would rather rent a phone I can use for domestic calls, both outgoing and incoming, while I am in the U.K.
LR:
That is in fact the option most of our customers choose.
Do you want to hire a phone for the full fortnight you are in the U.K.?
Also, from where will you depart the U.K.?
MN:
Yes, we’d like to rent a phone we can use for the entire time we are in the U.K.
As we will depart from here for our flight back to Osaka exactly two weeks from today, if possible, we would like to return the phone here just before we board that flight.
Is that possible?
LR:
That is ideal for us, thank you.
I suggest you rent either an iPhone 13 or an iPhone 14.
The base rental cost for two weeks would be US$112 for the former and US$140 for the latter.
A compulsory additional cost is U.S.$29 for what we call a credit bundle, which is what provides you with the 12GB of data included with the phone rental.
There is also optional insurance available for US$19.50.
MN:

LR:

文法ポイント:
a two week visitやa 5 minute walkの様に、名詞を形容詞的に用いる場合は単数化します。よって、I am having a 6 month course. や、It is located within a 1 hour drive. となります。
定冠詞theの用法は多岐に渡ります。固有名詞に添えられている場合は、ロジックがありません。
The BeatlesやThe North Faceですが、The Facebookではありません。
The UKやThe USAですが、The Japanではありません。
名前は名前ですから単純に名付けた方の選択です。(国の場合は、Republic、Kingdom、Statesを除き、通常はTheがつきません。)
法助動詞wouldの用法は3つです。今回はどの意味で用いられているでしょうか。
発音ポイント:
英語は、子音-母音-子音で1音節です。そして英単語の90%以上が1音節語です。しかし、2音節語も存在します。
例えば、
overは/ˈəʊ.vər/
honorは/ˈɒn.ər/
easyは/ˈiː.zi/
です。
音節毎に手を叩いて練習しましょう。
