満6ヶ月を迎えた息子は相変わらずfull of beansです。彼の社会人デビューのタイミングを相談するため、先日、役所にお邪魔しました。
イギリスやアイルランドと比べ、日本の幼児教育のシステムは全体的にシンプル且つ平等ですね :) 選択肢も限られている印象です。
イギリスやアイルランドは、基本的にDay Nursery (保育園)、Pre-School (幼稚園)、Creche (託児所)の3択で、全体数も多く、総じてNurseryと呼ばれます。
そして、どのタイプのNurseryを選べるのか、その中でどの施設を選べるのか、それは親の経済力に大幅に依存します。
各施設のインフラとカリキュラムの質は差も大きく、同時にどこのNurseryに所属していたのかによって、Primary School (小学校)の選択肢も左右されます。
現時点の私の理解ですが、日本ではNurseryの選択がイギリスやアイルランド程子供の人生に大きなインパクトを及ぼさないのではないでしょうか。もう少し勉強してみます :)
それでは、本日も会話練習用のダイアローグ、文法ポイントと発音ポイントに参ります。今回は第十弾です。

Baggage from UA38 should be available on baggage carousel 5 in a few minutes.
It’s the third carousel down there to the right.
HH:
Thank you.
I will go down there and wait for my suitcase.
Half an hour or so later . . .
HH:
Sorry to trouble you again but there’s no luggage left on carousel 5 and it has stopped revolving.
There’s no sign of my bag.
What should I do?
CD:
Please go to the United Airways desk over there and explain your situation.
DD:
Thank you.

At the United Airways desk . . .
HH:
Excuse me.
I’ve just arrived on UA38 from Haneda and my bag has not appeared on carousel 5.
Can you please help me?
JH:
Certainly, madam.
Do you still have your baggage claim ticket?
HH:
Yes, here it is.
JH:
Thank you.
That will be very helpful for us in tracking down your suitcase.
Can you please describe it for me.
HH:
Yes.
It is a light blue suitcase with a black handle.
It also has a bright orange belt tied around it.
JH:
That sounds quite distinctive and should help us to find your bag quickly.
Does your suitcase have a hard or soft exterior?
HH:
It is hard.
JH:
We will start looking for your suitcase immediately and will contact you as soon as we track it down.
Can you please write your name, arrival flight details, mobile phone number and email address on this form?
HH:

Where will you be staying in Los Angeles and how long will you be there?
HH:
I will stay at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel for three nights.
JH:

文法ポイント:
交通手段を述べる時、抽象的であればI travel by plane. 、具体的であればI travel on the plane.です。
車の時だけ、I travel by car.またはI travel in the car.となり、前置詞が異なるので気をつけて下さい。
法助動詞shouldは、shallの過去形です。では、shallの本質的な意味は何でしょうか。聖書で多用されています。willと比較して考えてみましょう。
upは上り、downは下りです。しかし、upとdownのコンセプトは、必ずしも上下動だけではありません。
日本語でも同様に、上り線や下り線、都へ上る、都落ち等と言います :)
発音ポイント:
アメリカの発音は特徴的です。例えば、Tの音です。
timeやconcertの様に第一音節または最終音節にある場合を除き、Tは、DとLの中間の音に変化します。
water、bottle、tar tar等で練習してみましょう。
自分で出せる音は必ず聴き取れますよ :)
