生後6ヶ月を迎えた息子は離乳食を始めました。麦茶とお粥を舐めさせられて顔をしかめる様子は一興でしたが、ああ日本人はこんなに小さな時からお茶を飲むんだな、、、と、日本人とお茶の関わりの深さを改めて感じさせられました。
(ヨーロッパでもお粥やピューレでスタートするのがメジャーな印象ですが、お茶という発想はありません。)
それでは、本日も会話練習用のダイアローグに参ります。今回は第九弾です。

HS:
I am from Japan but I had business meetings in Thailand on my way here and thus flew to Melbourne on a flight from Bangkok.

How long are you planning to be in Melbourne?
HS:
I will spend three nights here and then will travel to Sydney for five nights, including next weekend.
I will then spend three nights in Brisbane next week.
DD:
So you will be in Australia for about twelve days?
Where will you go after Brisbane?
HS:
I will fly to Christchurch in New Zealand.
DD:
You sound very busy.
What is the purpose of your visit to Australia?
HS:
Business.
My company operates Japanese restaurants in many locations.
DD:

HS:
No food but I do have some green tea sachets in my suitcase.
SC:
They are no problem.

HS:
No, I don’t think so.
Oh, sorry, I have a banana in it.
SC:
I’m sorry but bringing fresh products into Australia is a crime and totally prohibited.
Please immediately put the banana in the disposal bin over there.
HS:
Of course.
I’m sorry.
SC:
Please be more careful in the future.
HS:
I will definitely be much more careful next time I come to Australia.
SC:

文法ポイント:
Bringing fresh products into Australia is a crime. という文は、bringingが動名詞として機能しており動詞の進行形とは異なります。Bringing fresh products into Australiaは主語です。
例えば、I enjoy playing tennis. という文は、playingが動名詞として機能しており動詞の進行形とは異なります。playing tennisは目的語です。
発音ポイント:
businessは/ˈbɪz.nɪs/で、busynessは/ˈbɪz.i.nəs/です。カタカナのビジネスはbusynessに聞こえる為、注意が必要です。
可算名詞の複数形の発音は、isかsかzに別れます。原型がhouseの様にsで終わる場合はisで、sockの様に無声音で終わる場合はsで、playの様に有声音（母音や濁音）で終わる場合はzです。
