単語テスト授業記録（TOEFL対策、stammer, conversionなど解説）

今日もTOEFLの英単語を中心に単語テストを行いました。

６０問ほど出題しました。

使用教材は「TOEFLテスト英単語3800 4訂版 旺文社」（著者：神部 孝）です。

本日の注意すべき単語→3233 stammer、3242 innocuous、dormant、statutory、fallacious、contemplate、2782 refurbish、2363 jurisdiction、2579 concise、2438 concession、2399 genetics、2676 concord、2429 evasion、2610 soothe、2473 interim、2397 conversionなどです。

ピックアップして、単語の意味や例文を紹介したいと思います。

3233 stammer→映画「英国王のスピーチ」でなんども出てきました。"Vulgar but fluent. You don’t stammer when you swear." 「罵倒する言葉はどもらない」

3242 innocuous→"not harmful or offensive"無害な(Oxford English Dictionary)、innocentと同じ語源のようです。

1190 dormant→"having normal physical functions suspended or slowed down for a period of time; in a deep sleep"眠っているような、dormire(ラテン語)=to sleep、類語→dormitory（寮） 

1178 statutory→"required, permitted, or enacted by statute"法定の、statute＝制定された法、例文→You must keep the statutory speed on the expressway.

2429 evasion→"the action of evading something", evade"escape or avoid by guile or trickery"、回避、言い逃れ→例文→"I'm a former Air Force instructor, which is survival, evasion, resistance, and escape." (Jessie Krebs, MasterClass) この文でのevasionはおそらく、危険回避、とかそんな意味なんでしょうね。こうした例文が映像付きで探せるYouglishは神サイトですね🔥

2397 conversion→"the process of changing or causing something to happen to change from one form to another, the fact of changing one's religion or beliefs" 、変換・転換・改宗などの意味ですね。例文→"This conversion from wind to rotational energy to electricity has defined wind turbines since their invention in the late 19th century." (How do wind turbines work? : TED Ed)→風が風車を回すことで、エネルギーに転換される、という話ですね。TEDトークも良い英語学習の宝庫ですね。
