カマラ・ハリスさんの演説をご覧になりましたでしょうか。
On behalf of .......I accept your nomination to be the President of
the United States of America.
というやつです。
こういうエリートの方のスピーチは、とても聞き取りやすいです。
なぜなら、大勢の皆さんに向かって、わかりやすいように
また、わかってもらえるように話すからです。
という訳で、ディクテーションには持ってこいな感じなので
久しぶりにやってみました。
冒頭、旦那様やら大統領やら、皆さんに感謝を述べておられますが
それを飛ばしたところからです。
So, America, the path let me here in recent weeks was no doubt
unexpected. But I’m no stranger to unlikely journeys. So, my mother, our mother, Syamala Harris, had one of her own. And I miss her every
day, and especially right now. And I know she is looking down smiling.
I know that. So, my mother was 19 when she crossed the world alone, traveling from India to California, within an unshakable dream to be the scientist who would cure breath cancer. When she finished school, she was supposed to return home to a traditional arranged marriage.
But as fate would have it, she met my father, Donald Harris, a student
from Jamaica. They fell in love and got married, and that act of
self-determination made my sister, Maya, and me.
Growing up, we moved a lot. I will always remember that big May
Flower truck, packed all of our belongings ready to go to Illinois,
to Wisconsin, and wherever our parents’ jobs took us. My early
memories of our parents together are very joyful ones. A home filled
with laughter, and music, Aretha, Coltrane, and Miles. At the park, my mother would say “Stay close”, but my father would say, as he smiled “Run, Kamala. Don’t be afraid. Don’t let anyone stop you”
From my earliest years, he taught me to be fearless. But the harmony between our parents didn’t last. When I was in elementary school, they split up, and it was mostly my mother raised us.
Before she could finally afford to buy a home, she rented a small
apartment in the East Bay. In the bay, you either live in the hills or
the flat lands. We lived in the flats, a beautiful working-class
neighborhood of firefighters, nurses, and construction workers.

お母様がインドからカリフォルニアを一人で旅をしていて、学校を卒業したら地元に帰って結婚するはずが、ジャマイカの学生だったお父様と知り合って結婚した。。。ということは、カマラさんはインドとジャマイカの血なんでしょうか。他にも何か混じっているのでしょうか。
アメリカは移民の国で、日本と違っていくつもの血が流れている方々が多いようですね。私の友人の旦那様も、アメリカ人ですが、中国やらなんやら、色々と入っているようです。
私はカマラさんは好印象ですが、皆さんはいかがでしょう。
子供のころ、家の雰囲気は楽しくて音楽がかかっていて。。。
ということは、Aretha や Coltrane はミュージシャンの名前かな？
お母さまが、微笑んで上から見ている、恋しい。。。ということは
もうお亡くなりになっている、ということかな。
最後まで聞いていますと、力強くて、すごいな～と思います。
現実主義で、実践的で、常識のある大統領になる、と言いました。
彼女の経歴の中で成し遂げたことや、これから大統領になったらどうするつもりか。。。などなど。。。
とても聞きごたえのあるスピーチでした。
私にはこんな力はないけど。。。
日本にもこんな魅力的な人が現れないかな。。。 (笑)
