Phonics Phase 1

Dialogue between a Japanese tourist visiting Adelaide, Australia, and a local café worker
David Simpkins (DS):
Gidday, mate.
Welcome to the Torrens Café.
What would you like?
Ritsuko Baba (RB):
Thank you.
My friend Sachiko and I are first-time visitors to Adelaide and we’re not sure what to order.
Can you please recommend something that is popular?
DS:
Delighted to do so.
Our flat whites and cappuccinos are the most popular hot coffees among our regular customers.
I think you’ll enjoy their flavour and creamy texture.
RB:
Please give me two flat whites.
Cappuccinos are quite common in Japan but I’ve never had a flat white there.
What would you recommend for food to go with the flat whites?
DS:
Our most popular breakfast item is our smashed avocado toast.
It’s topped with feta cheese, cherry tomatoes, and a dash of dukkah.
The combination tastes great!
RB:
It sounds very intriguing.
I’ve never heard of dukkah, though – what is it?
DS:
It’s an ancient Egyptian mix of seeds, nuts and spices and is becoming very popular.
RB:
I’d like to try that.
Can we have two servings of smashed avocado toast, please?
DS:
Of course.
Would you like any sides to go with the dish?
RB:
“Sides”?
Sorry, I don’t understand.
Please explain.
DS.
Sure thing.
Here in Aussie we use “sides” to refer to “side dishes” or accompaniments.
“Side” options for the smashed avocado toast include bacon, eggs, tomatoes and mushrooms.
RB:
Just a minute, please.
Sachiko would like bacon and tomatoes and I’d like fried eggs.
DS:
Would you like anything else to drink besides the flat whites?
RB:
After our meal, we’d both like to try the iced coffee shown on the poster over there.
DS:
Good choice.
The iced coffee is made with a shot of espresso, cold milk and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
It’ll taste really good after your smashed avocado toast.
RB:
We are both looking forward to enjoying all that we have ordered.
How much will that be, please?
DS:
Let me see.
That will be $63, please.
How would you like to pay?
RB:
Do you take credit cards?
If so, I’d like to pay with my Visa credit card.
DS:
Certainly.
Please insert it in here.
Thank you.
It will take us a few minutes to prepare your food and coffees, so please take a table and wait for us.
At this time of the year, sitting on our deck outside looking out over the Torrens River is very popular.
RB:
Thank you.
We would both like to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.
DS:
Please do that.
Incidentally, if you want wi-fi, our free service is “kangaroo987”.
RB:
Thank you.
We will check messages while we wait for our food and coffees.
to go with や to come withというセットフレーズは多用されます。
This pasta goes well with the cheddar.
This jacket goes well with a red tie.
This jacket comes with a pair of trousers.
The first purchase with a coupon.
The ramen tastes great!
It smells fantastic!
I have a headache
tool
cool
school
pool
people
I'llは「あぉ」、You'llは「ゆぉ」、She'llは「しぉ」と発音しましょう!
