Dialogue between teacher Andrew Grant (AG) of Canada and student Mieko Sasaki (MS) of Japan
AG:
Welcome to our language school.
My name is Andrew Grant and I’m from Canada.
I’m delighted to teach your first lesson at our school.
MS:
Hello.
My name is Mieko Sasaki.
I work part-time as a receptionist in a medical clinic.
AG:
I’m very pleased to meet you, Mieko-san.
I hope you don’t mind my calling you that but our school practice is to call students by their first name.
Please tell me why you want to study English.
MS:
My daughter married a man from Oregon in the U.S. just before covid happened and, now covid restrictions have been lifted, I want to visit her, her husband and their two-year-old daughter later this year.
AG:
That’s a very good reason.
What do you want to focus on?
MS:
Everyday conversation – greeting people, shopping, going to cafes and restaurants, etc.
I also want to be able to communicate with my son-in-law’s family.
AG:
Understood.
Let’s start off today with some conversation starters with your son-in-law’s parents.
Imagine you are visiting their home and want to say how nice it is.
You could perhaps say something like “What a beautiful home you have. How long have you lived here”?
MS:
“What a beautiful home.”
Sorry, what comes after “How long . . .”?
AG:
“How long have you lived here”?
MS:
Oh, I see.
“What a beautiful home you have. How long have you lived here”?
AG:
Very good.
After they answer, you could perhaps ask either “Where did you live before?” or “Why did you choose this area to live in?”.
MS:
Thank you.
What about when I go shopping and want to buy something?
AG:
If, for example, you want to buy a dress, you could say to the shop assistant “I like this dress. Can I try it on, please”.
MS:
“Try it on”?
AG:
Actually try wearing a dress and check it for size, etc.
MS:
Ah, now I understand.
I will ask you a lot of other things next week.
AG:
I look forward to that.
Lovely to meet you, Mieko-san.
See you next week.
文法ポイント:
