The Buddha was known for his incredible eloquence, traditionally described by the symbol of a “long and broad tongue” — a mark of his great ability to speak the truth. But even so, people responded to his teachings in many different ways. 
Some listened deeply and earnestly, as if water were soaking into dry sand. Some were moved to tears. Others pushed back or criticized him. Some dozed off while listening, and some simply got up and left without interest.
