Computers are among the fastest and most useful instruments for
sorting and comparing now in use. Computers provide the means for
greater speed and accuracy in working with ideas than had previously
been possible. With the development of these new tools, it is as if man has suddenly become a millionaire of the mind.
Although man has been growing mentally richer ever since he started to think, the computer allows and will continue to allow him to perform vast “mental” tasks in a relatively short time. Great scientists of the
past produced ideas which were the basis for great advances, but their ideas sometimes had to wait for years before they were understood
sufficiently well to be in practical use. With the computers, the ideas of today's scientists can be studied, tested, distributed, and used more
rapidly than ever before.
Computers can work through a series of problems and make
thousands of logical decisions without becoming tired. Computers can
reach solutions to problems in a fraction of the time it takes men to do the job. Computers can replace men in dull, routine tasks, but they are not creative and cannot exercise value judgments. Computers have no originality; they work according to the instructions given them. There
are times when computers seem to operate like mechanical “brains,”
but their achievements are not very amazing when compared to what
the minds of men can do.

今日、いろいろな計器が分類や比較のために使われているが、その中でもコンピュータは最も高速で便利なものである。コンピュータは、思考作業において以前に可能だったより速く、より正確な手段を提供している。これらの新しい道具の開発に伴い、人間は突如思考力の百万長者になったかに見える。
人間は思考を行うようになって以来、精神的に豊かになってきてはいるが、コンピュータは人が比較的短時問で莫大な「頭脳的」な仕事を行うことを可能にし、今後も可能にし続けるだろう。過去の偉大な科学者達は大いなる進歩の基礎となるような様々の着想を生み出したが、彼らの考えは実用可能なほど十分理解されるまでに、時に何年も待たなければならなかった。コンピュータのおかげで、今日の科学者のアイデアはかつてないほどの速さで研究され、検証され、広められ、利用され得るのだ。
コンピュータは疲れることなく一連の問題に取り組み、何千もの論理的決定を下すことができる。コンピュータは、人間がその作業をする何分の一かの時間で問題に対する解決に到達することができる。コンピュータは、退屈な、決まり切った仕事を人間にとって代わって行うことができるが、それらは創造的ではなく、価値判断をすることはできない。コンピュータには独創性はない。すなわち、与えられた指示に従って動くだけである。コンピュータが機械でできた「脳」のように作動しているように見える時があるが、それによって成し遂げられた仕事は、人間の知力ができることに比べてそれほど驚異的というほどではない。

After all, the whole point of computers is that they represent an
extension of the human brain, vastly improved upon but nonetheless
human, superhuman maybe. A good computer can think clearly and
quickly enough to beat you at chess, and some of them have even been programmed to write obscure verse. They can do anything we can do, and more besides.
The evidences of something like an unconscious equivalent of ours,
are all around. As extensions of the human brain, they have been
constructed with the same characteristic tendency toward error――
spontaneous, uncontrolled, and rich in possibilities.

コンピュータは我々人間を無意識にしたようなものだという証拠は、我々の周りにころがっている。人間の頭脳の延長上のものとして、人間と同じく誤りを犯すという特徴的傾向をもって作られている。すなわち、自発的で、制御不能で、可能性に富んでいるのである。

Useful as it is, a computer is neither more nor less than a machine
that faithfully follows our instructions. It is a grave mistake, therefore,
to think that a computer can pass a judgement of its own on issues
where we have no clear-cut guidelines. For example, when a computer says, “Destroy your enemy,” you must think twice before you take any action. In fact, a computer can never give orders, but only make
suggestions. There is, however, one area of our mental activity which a computer can perform infinitely better than we. That is memorizing.
Alas, we all fall short of the simplest computer in this respect.

役に立つものではあるのだが、コンピュータは、我々の指図に忠実に従う機械以上のものでも、それ以下のものでもない。それゆえに、明確な指針のない問題について、コンピュータが自分の判断を下せるなどと考えたらそれは重大な誤りである。例えばコンピュータが「敵を壊滅せよ」と指示を出したときには、我々は何らかの行動を起こす前によく考えなければならない。実際、コンピュータは命令することなどまでできず、提案することができるだけなのだ。しかしながら、我々の精神活動のうちで、コンピュータが我々よりはるかにうまくやれる領域がある。それが「記憶」である。残念ながら、この点に関して、我々は最も簡単なコンピュータにさえ追いつけないのである。
