11月も中旬を迎え、気温がグッと下がってきましたね。体調を崩しやすい季節です。仕事と家族の日程も変動的な今、風邪をひくわけにはいきません! 私はエゾエースで乗り越えます笑

最近は就学前英語教育のあり方についてよく考えます。

幼児用の英語学習の目的とは何なのでしょうか。周りから聞くのは、1. 英語能力全般に慣れさせる。2. 英語学習過程に嫌な印象を持たせない。3. 英語でのコミュニケーションにポジティヴな印象を持たせる。です。

という事は、英会話学校で、英語でのコミュニケーションは楽しいし、学習過程も嫌いじゃないし、だから英語を勉強したい! と思わせられたら目的は達成という事でしょうか。

私は両親の趣味や居間で楽しそう行っている事は何であれ自分も一緒にやって楽しみたかったです。反対に両親がやっていない事、話題にも出ない事を自分だけやらされるのが嫌でした。

もしかすると、理想的な就学前英語教育の鍵は、親と子が一緒に楽しめ且つ英語の要素が盛り込まれた何かを見つける事かもしれません。

引き続き考えてみたいと思います :)

FDR:

SK: 

Hello. 

My name is Sakiko Kogure and I’m from Japan. 

My daughter Rie and I have just arrived from Sapporo in Japan and we have a twin room booking here for the next four nights. 

We would like to book in now, please.  

FDR: 

Certainly, Mrs. Kogure. 

Please let me check our system.

Ah, yes, you have booked a premium twin room.

Your room is 814 on the 8th floor.

Here is your key.

Do you have any questions about your room or the hotel?

SK: 

We are very tired and will stay in our room until tomorrow morning.

Is room service available for dinner?

FDR: 

Yes, it is.

The last order is at 10 p.m.

There is a full menu on the desk in your room.

Please dial 18 when you want to place an order.

SK:

Thank you.

That is very helpful.

We plan to get up early over the next three days and explore many of the key attractions of Paris.

Can you tomorrow please help us with guidance on getting around Paris?

FDR:

Of course.

We want you to have a memorable time in our beautiful city and will help you as much as possible.

Our concierge desk over there is able to provide detailed assistance.

SK:

Thank you.

We will go to the concierge desk early tomorrow morning.

By the way, what time is breakfast available and where is the breakfast restaurant?

FDR:

Our buffet breakfast is available from 6.30 a.m. in the Frame Brasserie on the second floor of this hotel.

It is directly above this front desk!

Checking out four days later . . .

SK:

Good morning.

I’m Sakiko Kogure and my daughter Rie and I have been staying in room 814 for the past four nights.

We’d like to check out now, please.

FDR:

Certainly, Mrs. Kogure.

How will you pay?

SK:

With this JCB credit card, please.

FDR:

Thank you.

SK:

Yes, everything is fine, thank you.

FDR:

SK: 

It was excellent, thank you. 

Our room was very comfortable and we loved the buffet breakfasts.

文法ポイント:

法助動詞canには大きく二つの意味があります。

その一つ「出来る」・「出来ない」でcanもしくは過去形のcouldを使う際は、「当たり前の様に出来る・出来ない」や「通常出来る・出来ない」というニュアンスが強調されるので注意しましょう。例えば、

I can drive a car.

You can get there on foot.

です。

単発な内容の事が「出来る」・「出来ない」の場合は、to be able という形容詞を使う方が望ましいです。

We could not have a meeting last week. よりも、We were not able to have a meeting last week.の方が自然です。

また特殊な環境下で何かが「出来る」・「出来ない」の場合もto be able を使う方が望ましいです。

Everybody could escape from the fire last night. よりも、Everybody was able to escape from the fire last night. の方が自然です。

また、特殊な能力であることを強調する時も to be able を使います。

They are able to run a full marathon.

発音ポイント:

引き続き2音節語の発音を練習しましょう。音節境界「.」と左上の強調記号「ˈ」を意識して下さい。強調記号がある方の音節にストレスがきます。
