Absolute happiness is the state of being saved by Amida’s Vow. Master Shinran attained this state at the age of 29. When one attains absolute happiness, they receive what is called the “ten benefits in the present world” — ten types of happiness experienced during this lifetime.

The word “benefit” here means “happiness.” So, according to Master Shinran, anyone can be saved by Amida’s Vow and enjoy ten kinds of happiness while still alive.

He listed each of these benefits in his major work, Kyogyoshinsho. One of them is the benefit of evil turning into good.

What does this benefit mean? It refers to a state in which even suffering is transformed into joy. This is the state into which Master Shinran was saved. He expressed this transformation in a hymn:

Hindrances of sin become the substance of merit.
It is just as with ice and water:
The greater the ice, the greater the water.
The greater the hindrance, the greater the virtue.

Here, “Hindrances of sin” refers to suffering.
