The Buddha taught that the root of unhappiness is not blind passions (worldly desires) but “the darkness of mind” (The mind ignorant of what will happen after death). 

If blind passions are the source of suffering, it would mean that we cannot be happy unless we eliminate blind passions. Then, that would mean he was teaching that almost all of us cannot be happy. However, that is not true.
