The ‘desire for fame’ taught of in Buddhism is the wish to be praised, to be appreciated, and to be superior to others.
The psychiatrist Alfred Adler said that the basic driving force of human behavior is a “striving for superiority.” Seeking to be superior to others, wanting to be better than others, hoping to be greater than others: this is a major human desire. It’s part of our very core.
Rather than being something that is cultivated by life experiences after we are born, it’s something that every human has by default. Our desire for fame and our conceit make us look down on others.
