As AI tools rapidly improve, many people wonder whether learning foreign languages is still necessary. AI can already translate, summarize, and support real-time communication.
AIの進化により、「外国語学習はもう不要ではないか」という疑問が生まれている。翻訳や要約など、AIが担える役割は急速に広がっている。
A recent review on AI in language education found that AI improves personalized learning, feedback quality, and learner motivation. However, it also concluded that AI works best as a support tool rather than a replacement for human learning.
最近のレビュー研究では、AIは学習効率やモチベーション向上に役立つとされている。ただし、人間の学習を完全に代替する存在ではない。
The labor market shows a similar trend. According to the OECD, AI is associated with growing demand for workers who combine domain expertise with digital skills. Another OECD study suggests that English skills remain highly valued in the labor market, especially in globally connected industries. At the same time, companies increasingly expect workers to use AI productively, suggesting that AI literacy is becoming a basic workplace skill rather than a competitive advantage.

This suggests that AI may reduce the value of translation as a task, but not the strategic value of language itself. More importantly, the basis of competition is changing. In the past, English was often a major differentiator. Today, AI literacy is becoming the baseline, while English remains a key differentiator.
AIは翻訳作業の価値を下げる可能性があるが、言語そのものの価値は失われていない。むしろ、AI活用力が前提となる中で、英語力は依然として差別化要因である。
If two workers can use AI equally well, the one with stronger English skills will still have an advantage in accessing information, using AI more effectively, and pursuing global opportunities.
AI does not remove competition—it changes what workers compete on.

AIと外国語学習の議論になると、「AIでは生身のコミュニケーションは代替できない」「心を通わせることはできない」といった、感情的・抽象的な結論に落ち着きがちです。もちろん、それらも重要な視点だと思います。
