翻訳のアレコレ③ 悪い翻訳

皆さんは通訳者兼翻訳者の戸田奈津子さんをご存じでしょうか。トム・クルーズの通訳者であり、様々な映画の字幕を担当している方ですが、ネットで検索をすると字幕への批判が目立ちます。比較がしやすいため批判が自然と多くなると考えているのですが、では実際何をもって「悪い翻訳」とみなすのでしょうか。今回は個人的な見解を上げたいと思います。

一番の理由は、「解釈違い」ではないでしょうか。字幕の場合は文字数制限があるため、自身で解釈して、どれだけ短い文に多くの情報を詰め込める必要があります。短くしたいがために登場人物の口調が短くなりすぎて、思っていた話し方と違うと感じる観客もいるかと思います。

また、翻訳者側の「目的」が受け取る側が求めていたものが違う、という場合もあります。例えば、有名な日本のゲームで「大神」という日本神話をもとにしたゲームがあります。ローカライズ版は日本の神話をそのまま伝えたいという考え方から原作に忠実な翻訳が行われています。翻訳学では、Skopos Theoryといい、目的によって訳し方は無限にできる、という理論があります。この理論にのっとると、海外の方は日本神話になじみがないから西欧の神話に置き換える、ということもできてしまいます。しかし、海外のプレイヤーは「日本のゲーム」を求めているため、このような目的で翻訳がされていたら大炎上していたと思います。実際、逆転裁判というゲームでは活動の場所が日本からアメリカに代わっており、批判があったみたいです。

Have you ever heard of an interpreter and translator Natsuko Toda? 

She was the interpreter for Tom Cruise and is in charge of subtitles for various movies, but searched the internet, I saw a lot of criticism of her subtitles. I believe that this is because it is easy to make comparisons, which naturally leads to more criticism, but what actually constitutes 

a "bad translation"? Today, I would like to share my personal opinion.

I think the most common reason is "misinterpretation. In the case of 

subtitles, there is a limit on how many characters you can use, so you 

have to interpret it independently and see how much information you 

can pack into a short sentence. To keep it short, the tone of the 

characters becomes too short, and some audience members may feel 

that the way they speak is different from what they expected.

There are also cases where the "purpose" the translator cast on 

themselves is not what the recipient expected. For example, there is a 

famous Japanese game based on Japanese mythology called "Okami". 

The localized version has been translated faithfully to the original with 

the idea of conveying Japanese mythology as it is. In translation 

studies, there is a theory called the Skopos Theory, which states that 

there are an infinite number of ways to translate a text depending on its purpose. According to this theory, translators can consider that 

foreign players are unfamiliar with Japanese mythology, so it should be replaced with Western mythology. However, foreign players were 

looking for a "Japanese game," and if a translation had been made for 

this purpose, there would have been a huge firestorm. In fact, in the 

game Ace Attorney, the location of the activities has been replaced from Japan to the U.S., and it seems that there was some criticism.
