何故傘は傘の形のままなのか。一説によれば傘は約4,000年前からあるそうだ。中国は4,000年の内に世界トップクラスの経済大国になったが、傘は雨の日に私たちの足元すら守れないままだ。傘の携帯性を担保するため、他の雨具を併用することで雨をしのぐことが出来るためなど傘が形を変えない理由を論理的に説明する声もある。だが、濡れた傘の持ち運びは煩わしいし、靴を濡らさないために長靴に替えたり、レインコートを着たりする人は少ないように思う。では、何故傘は傘のままであり続けるのだろうか。
私の考えるこの問題への答えはずばり「愛着」だ。世界中多くの人々が、足元が濡れることや、風でひっくり返ってしまうこと、そしてその様子を連想することにある種の安心感を覚えているのではないだろうか。リモートワーク中に猫がキーボードに寝転がる事然り、子供がまだ遊びたいと地団駄を踏む事然り、煩わしいことが妙にかわいく思えてしまうことはこの世の常ではないだろうか。
ここまでしょうもない論を並べてきた私だが、一つだけ確実に言えることがある。それは、お気に入りの革ブーツを履いていて急な雨が降った時に、こんなことを考える余裕はないということだ。

Umbrella is STILL Umbrella
Why do umbrellas keep their shape as an umbrella? According to one
theory, umbrellas have existed for around 4,000 years. China became
one of the world's top economic powers within 4,000 years, but
umbrellas are still unable to protect our feet on rainy days. Some
people have logical explanations for why they keep their form; maybe
to ensure their portability, or because they can be used in collaboration with other rain gear to keep out the rain. However, carrying a wet
umbrella is troublesome, and I observe that few people tend to switch
to boots to keep their shoes dry or wear a raincoat. If so, why do
umbrellas keep their form?
The answer to this question, in my openion, is simply “attachment”.
Feet getting wet and umbrellas overturning by wind. People are feeling sense of security to these events. It is a shared phenomenon around
the world that annoying things, such as a cat lying on the keyboard
while working remotely, or children breaking down because they still
want to play, seem strangely cute.
I have been making a lot of silly arguments, but there is one thing I can say with certainty; when I am wearing my favorite leather boots and it suddenly rains, I have no time to think about these kinds of things.
