翻訳のアレコレ② 名前変更

私はアニメや漫画なのが大好きで、ジョジョの奇妙な冒険（ジョジョ）という作品がかなり好きです。今回はこの作品が海外でローカライズされる際に問題となった著作権についてお話しをしたいと思います。

ジョジョの登場人物はスタンドという守護霊のような能力を使える登場人物が多く、各スタンドに名前がついています。例を挙げると、キラークイーン、エコーズ、エアロスミス、などです。洋楽が好きな方はお気づきだと思いますが、スタンドの名前の多くは洋楽アーティスト名や曲名を使っています。ここで問題になってくるのが著作権です。海外展開する際に著作権の問題で多くのスタンド名が改変されました。キラークイーンはデッドリークイーン、エコーズはリバーブ、エアロスミスはリトルボマーとなりました。中には面白い改変もあるので、３つほど紹介します。

① スティッキーフィンガー → Zipper Man

ローリング・ストーンズというバンドのアルバム名が元です。ジョジョではジッパーを発現させて空間移動などができるスタンドですが、そのままの名前になってしまいました。スタンドを呼び出す際に「ジッパーマン！」と叫ぶわけですから、かなり滑稽です。

② Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap → Filthy Act At A Reasonable Price

元はAC/DCというバンドの曲で 、原作では「いともたやすく行われるえげつない行為」、略してD4Cと呼ばれています。ローカライズ版は直訳すると「良心的な価格で行われる汚い行為」になります。似たような名前にと意識したと思うのですが、略した場合はFAAARPとなるので、カッコよさがダダ下がりしたように感じます。

③ Limp Bizkit → Flaccid Pancake

有名なラッパーの名前が元です。Rollin’という曲が特に有名かと思います。直訳すると「ぐにゃぐにゃしたビスケット」ですが、実際の意味は「大麻入りのビスケット」のスラングらしいです。ローカライズ版は直訳すると「たるんだパンケーキ」になります。こちらも似たような名前を意識しています。パンケーキって全部たるんでいると思うのですが…。

このようにローカライズ版でキャラクターの名前が変わることは非常に多いです。多くの場合はローカライズ先になじみやすい名前になるのですが、今回は著作権が問題で起こった改変なのでかなり特殊な状態です。現在ジョジョの連載が続いているので、新たに面白いローカライズが出ることを願っています。

I love anime and manga, and I am quite fond of a work called Jojo's 

Bizarre Adventure (JoJo). I would like to talk about the copyright issue 

that arose when this work was localized overseas.

Many of the characters in JoJo have the ability called a stand, a 

guardian spirit-like ability, and each stand has a name. Examples 

include Killer Queen, Echoes, Aerosmith, and so on. As you may have 

noticed if you like Western music, many of the names are based on the names of Western artists and songs. The problem here is copyright. 

Many stand names were altered due to copyright issues when they 

were localized overseas. Killer Queen became Deadly Queen, Echoes 

became Reverb, and Aerosmith became Little Bomber. Some of the 

changes are quite interesting, so I will introduce three of them today.

(1) Sticky Finger → Zipper Man

This is based on the name of an album by the Rolling Stones. In JoJo, it is a stand that manifests zippers and can move through space, etc., but it has been renamed as it is. When he uses his stand, he shouts “Zipper Man!” when calling up the stand, which is quite funny.

The original song is by the band AC/DC and is called “D4C” in the 

original manga. I think they were trying to come up with a similar 

name, but when abbreviated, it becomes FA3RP, which doesn’t sound 

right.

(3) Limp Bizkit → Flaccid Pancake

The name is based on the name of a famous rapper, whose song 

“Rollin'” is particularly renowned. The actual meaning of the name 

seems to be slang for “biscuit with marijuana.” I get it that the 

localizers want to make it have a similar name, but aren’t all pancakes 

flaccid...?

It is prevalent for a character's name to change in a localized version like this one. In most cases, the name will be familiar to the target audience’s culture, but this is a very special situation because the change was caused by copyright issues. Since Jojo's serialization is currently continuing, I hope that a new and interesting localization will emerge.
