朝、目覚まし時計の代わりにスマートフォンの画面をタップします。そこから始まる一日の中で、私たちは何度あの小さなガラスの板を見つめているでしょうか。便利さと引き換えに、私たちは静かに、しかし確実に精神の安定を削り取られているのかもしれません。
近年の研究は、スマートフォンの過剰な利用がうつ病のリスクを跳ね上げるという事実を突きつけています。
しかし、真に恐ろしいのは、心の痛みを紛らわせるために再び画面に逃げ込んでしまう（容易に逃げ込める）という、（逃げ込めるが）逃げ場のない「双方向の悪循環」に囚われることです。
なぜ、手のひらの中の電子世界が、私たちの心を暗闇に突き落とすのでしょうか。
そこには4つの罠が潜んでいます。
まずは、夜の静寂を乱すブルーライトです。それは睡眠を促すメラトニンを遮断し、私たちの夜を不自然に引き延ばします。脳が休まらない慢性的な睡眠不足は、感情のフィルターを摩耗させ、朝の重い気分の落ち込みを引き起こします。
次に、SNSという名の終わりのない比較劇です。画面に並ぶのは、他人が切り取った「人生のハイライト」ばかりです。それに比べて自分の日常がいかに色褪せているか。無意識の比較は劣等感を呼び、さらにタイムラインに溢れるネガティブなニュースが、私たちの悲観的な思考に拍車をかけます。そして、押し寄せる情報の渦は私たちの脳を確実に蝕んでいきます。絶え間ない情報流入によって、感情や理性を司る「前頭前野」は過労状態に陥ります。これが「スマホ脳過労」です。心を穏やかに保つセロトニンは枯渇し、理由のないイライラや意欲の低下が心を満たしていきます。
さらに、私たちは画面と繋がる代わりに、現実の世界を失っていきます。対面の会話は減り、趣味の時間は削られ、気づけば社会的な孤立という名の透明な壁に囲まれています。
実を言うと、蒼俊は過去に僧侶になる前のうつ病が酷いときに、閉鎖病棟に入院したことがあります。
そこでは携帯電話はおろか、テレビさえもありません。
何一つ私物を所持できない空間でした。外部からの情報が完全に遮断された世界に放り込まれた瞬間、私を襲ったのは形容しがたい恐怖感でした。
その当時の私は、常に刺激を求め、タイムラインを追いかけていた脳。
脳は、情報の飢餓状態に陥り、激しく混乱しました。さらに、時間の流れる速度が信じられないほど遅く感じられました。スマホを見ていれば一瞬で過ぎ去る数時間が、そこでは永遠の砂漠を歩くかのように、気の遠くなる長さで迫ってきたのです。
しかし今にして思えば、あの過酷な隔離こそが、自分がいかに深刻な「スマホ依存症」であったかを痛烈に再認識する機会となりました。
この情報飢餓による苦痛と、それによってもたらされる心の解放は、日本で生まれた精神療法である「森田療法」の第一ステージ、「孤立臥褥（がじょく）」の時間を彷彿とさせます。
何もせず、何の情報も入れず、ただ横になって自分の不安をそのまま引き受けること。
それはまさに、スマホがもたらす過剰な思考のループを強制終了するための荒療治でもありました。
禅の修行においても、心と身体はひとつであり、互いに影響し合っているという「身心一如（しんしんにょ）」の教えのもと、今この瞬間に集中することを大切にします。しかし、私たちの手元にあるスマートフォンは、人間の欲望を刺激し、絶え間なく心を乱す要素で満ちています。
今この瞬間から私たちを最も遠ざける存在、それがスマホなのかもしれません。
この乱れた心を調え、日常生活の中で「あるがまま」の自分を取り戻すために、禅宗のアプローチは二つの処方箋を示してくれます。
一つは、曹洞宗の「只管打坐（しかんたざ）」です。これは悟りを開くという目的すら持たず、ただひたすらに座り、何かを考えることを完全に手放す修行です。常に情報を受け取り、何かを考えさせられ続けている私たちの脳にとって、この「何も考えない」という徹底した休息こそが、いま最も必要なセロトニンの回復薬となります。
もう一つは、臨済宗の「看話禅（かんわぜん）」です。こちらは論理的には解けない問題「公案（こうあん）」をあえて頭をフル回転させて考え抜きます。 スマートフォンの受動的な情報に振り回されるのではなく、答えのない究極の問いに主体的かつ深く向き合うことで、散漫になった集中力を一点に取り戻すことができます。
私たちは、「つながりすぎる世界」の中で、自分自身との「つながりを失いつつ」あります。閉鎖病棟での過酷な体験や、森田療法が示すように、私たちは一度、あの情報の濁流から身を引き、立ち止まらなければなりません。
時に画面を伏せ、ある時は思考を完全に手放し、またある時は一つの本質的な問いに命を注ぐこと。それだけが、手のひらの上の悪循環から抜け出し、本当の心の平穏を取り戻す鍵なのかもしれません。
蛇足ではありますが、真言宗にも瞑想があり、「阿字観瞑想」や「月輪瞑想」などがあります。私も師僧の寺院で、定期的に学びのブラッシュアップをしています。
