「有効な・妥当な」という意味の形容詞で、反対語は invalid「無効な」ですね。

ライティングでは次のように使えるかなと思います。

Before accepting any information as valid, students should evaluate the credibility of its source with great care.

情報を有効なものとして受け入れる前に、学生はその情報源の信頼性を慎重に評価すべきである。

Farmers should argue that rising production costs are a valid reason for increasing the price of rice.

農家は生産コストの上昇が、米の値段を上げる妥当な理由であると主張すべきである。

もともとは「強い・力がある」というラテン語で、そこから「論理的に強い」「根拠がしっかりしている」という意味になったようです。
