As AI rapidly expands, global electricity demand is rising at an unprecedented pace. Data centers require enormous amounts of power, driving tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon to sign long-term electricity contracts and invest directly in nuclear energy projects to secure stable power for their AI infrastructure.

AIの普及により、世界の電力需要は急増している。巨大IT企業でさえ、AIを支える安定電力の確保のため、原子力への関与を強めている。

Supporters welcome this shift, arguing that nuclear power provides clean and stable baseload electricity. Critics, however, remain concerned about safety risks, massive construction costs, and the unresolved issue of radioactive waste disposal. In Japan, this debate remains especially sensitive because of the memory of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.

原発支持派は、安定供給と脱炭素の両立を評価している。 一方で、安全性や廃棄物処理への懸念は根強く、日本では福島の記憶が議論をより複雑にしている。

Importantly, Japan has achieved remarkable success in energy conservation and efficiency since the 1973 oil crisis. Yet, the AI era is introducing a completely new set of rules. Economic growth increasingly depends on access to massive, non-stop electricity—a challenge that goes beyond the traditional framework of saving power.

日本は長年、省エネと効率化で大きな成果を上げてきた。 しかしAI時代には、節電だけでは対応できない新たな電力需要が生まれている。

Seen from this perspective, the AI era may force Japan to rethink its long-standing energy assumptions. The central question may gradually shift from how to save electricity to how to build a system capable of producing more power domestically. In such a world, energy sovereignty may matter as much as technological innovation.

AI時代は、日本のエネルギー観そのものの見直しを迫っているのかもしれない。 今後は「いかに節電するか」より、「いかに国内で電力を生み出すか」が重要な論点になる可能性がある。
