　　フレデリックみたいに

　発明王エジソンは、子どもの頃学校の成績がとても悪かったそうです。自分の空想の世界にはいって、大人の話を聞かなかったのが原因だったようです。成績が悪いといっても、理由はきっと様々です。いっしょに

勉強をしているうちに理由がわかってくることもしばしば。子どもを責める前に、どんな状況が成績不振を招いているのか、よく見て、考えてみなければなりません。

　レオ・レオニという作家の絵本に「フレデリック」（谷川俊太郎訳）という作品があります。古い石垣に住む野ねずみたちが冬ごもりの準備で食べものを集め始めたのだけれど、そのうちのフレデリックだけは別。「おひさまのひかり」や「いろ」や「ことば」を集めていて、みんなといっしょに働かない。みんな腹を立てたりすのるだけれど、冬になって食べものが尽きてみんなが凍えそうになっている時に、フレデリックの話す詩を聞いて、みんなは「はくしゅかっさい」。元気をもらう。

　エジソンやフレデリックのように周囲に認められる時が、どの子にも来ると思います。努力は必要ですが、どの子もちゃんと一人前の大人になることができると思います。個性が認められる世の中にこれからますます変わっていくでしょうから。子どもの問題は大人の問題。子どもといっしょに歩くことがとても大切だと確信しています。

Like Frederick

Thomas Edison was a great inventor. When he was a child, he was not good at school. He liked to imagine things and did not listen to adults.

There is a picture book called “Frederick” by Leo Lionni. In the story, mice collect food for winter. But Frederick does not collect food. He collects sunlight, colors, and words. The other mice are angry at him.

When winter comes, the mice have no food and feel sad. Then Frederick talks about his poems. The mice are happy and get energy from his words.

I learned that everyone has their own good points. We should not judge people because they are different from us. We should understand and respect each person’s personality.
