ホーンビーの「25動詞型理論」について

　ホーンビーは日本における初期の英語教育にも助言者として関わった人物で、日本ではよく知られていますが、A guide to Patterns and Usage in English（1954）で「25動詞型理論」を提唱し、さらに53～69の下位区分を提示しています（「動詞型」の概念は元々パーマー〔Palmer〕が唱導したと言われます）。これはThe Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English（1977）でも採用され、後の改訂版では統合・簡略化が進められている分類区分です。

動詞型1　動詞＋単一直接目的語

　I know your name.

動詞型2　動詞＋（not＋）to不定詞など

　Please try to do better next.

動詞型3　動詞＋（代）名詞＋（not＋）to不定詞など

I do not want anyone to know.

動詞型4　動詞＋（代）名詞など＋（not＋）（to be＋）叙述語

　Most people supposed him (to be) innocent.

　Watch that boy jump!

動詞型6　動詞＋（代）名詞＋現在分詞

　I saw the thief running away.

　これは「文の表層構造」の分析が中心になっており、しかも文法レベルでの記述というよりも、辞書における語法の説明の便宜を図ったものと言えるでしょう。
