One of Japan's largest Wagyu cattle breeding companies has started full-scale vegetable production in Shiraoi town where they have a ranch.
They have been growing peppers and other vegetables since this spring and shipping them out of Hokkaido.
He says, "I want to contribute to the promotion of agriculture in Shiraoi" by growing leafy vegetables throughout the year, even in winter.
The company's vegetable production base is a seven-hectare farm.
This spring, in addition to peppers, the company started to produce Italian parsley, basil, and other herbs.
Their mainstay peppers are shipped to supermarkets in Hokkaido and the Tokyo metropolitan area through a specialized supplier.
The harvest will be finished soon, and the total production volume is expected to be about 40 tons this fiscal year.
The herbs are also supplied to restaurants in Shiraoi Town and other parts of Japan and are used in Italian cuisine and other dishes.
In the greenhouses where the peppers have been harvested, they have started growing spinach.
The first shipment will be made after mid-December and the production will continue until April next year.

This is said to be an initiative to connect livestock and agriculture.
Cattle manure from the farm is composted and used as a fertilizer for agricultural products.
On the other hand, the leftover produce from the farms is used to feed the cows and so on, in order to establish a recycling-based production system.
