Harvesting of soybeans is underway in Iwamizawa, one of Hokkaido's leading soybean production areas.
The cultivation of soybeans in Iwamizawa City began about 20 years ago as a way to prevent barley crop failure, and today the city is one of the leading producers of soybeans in Hokkaido, with more than 350 farmers producing about 5,000 tons of soybeans every year.
According to a local agricultural cooperative, there were concerns about the impact of the low rainfall during the summer sowing season on the harvest volume, but they expect the harvest to be at or above the normal level.
The soybean harvest will continue through the end of this month, and the soybeans will be shipped to tofu and natto makers all over Japan.
