「拘束する、拘留する」という意味の動詞で、スペルは簡単ですが少し意味が難しいですね。

名詞の detention は「（放課後の罰としての）居残り」という意味もあるので、こちらの方が使いやすいかもしれません。

It is important for immigration authorities to detain undocumented migrants until their legal status is determined.

（移民当局が、法的地位が決定されるまで不法滞在者を拘留することは、重要である。）

Educational institutions should carefully consider the impact of detention on a student's academic and emotional well-being, as excessive use may hinder the learning environment.

（教育機関は、居残りが学生の学業成績や心の健康に与える影響を、注意深く考慮すべきである。なぜなら過度な居残りの使用は学習環境に支障をきたす可能性があるからだ。）

スペルがそのまま　tion を付ける　detaintion ではない事に注意が必要ですね。
