As the dispatched group headed east, when they came to the Seta Bridge, part of the bridge was broken, making it difficult for vehicles carrying goods to cross. After entering the third month, the messenger finally entered the country of Musashi and arrived at this man's place. At that time, Princess called a messenger from the palace nearby and said, "There must have been a connection from a previous life that led to this. I wanted to see this man's house so much that I ordered him to bring me here. It seems like a very comfortable place to live. If this man is caught and punished for his crime, what should I say?" , said Princess. "The reason why things like this happened is probably because there was a connection in a previous life that led to things like this. Please return to Kyoto as soon as possible and report this to the Imperial Family." , said Princess. The messenger had no choice but to return to the capital and tell Emperor what had happened. 父の赴任地の千葉を出発して、今は武蔵の国に入った。 ここは特段に興味を引く風情のある場所はない。 武蔵の国の浜辺には白砂などのゆかしい砂はなくて、ただ泥のようであった。 紫草という綺麗な花が咲いていると聞いていたが、実際は武蔵の野原は葦や萩だけが背が高く生い茂っていて、先導をする馬に乗った護衛が弓を持って進んでいるのですが、それさえも葦などが高く茂っているので良く見えない。 そのような茂みの中の細道を歩んで行くと、竹芝というお寺があった。 ここから少し離れた場所に ははそう という場所があって、そこにはかつてあった邸宅の礎石が残って居る。 この辺りはどんな場所ですか？ と私が尋ねると、 『 この辺りは昔、竹芝と言った坂がありました。 この土地に一人の男が住んで居ました。 京の都の宮中で雇われて、この場所から移り住んで居ました。 そして、宮中で使う火を管理する仕事をしていました。 ある時その男は、宮中の御殿の庭の掃き掃除をしながら、 「私はどうしてこんなにつらい目にあっているのだろう。 私が武蔵の国住んで居た時は、こっちに七つ、あっちに三つの酒を仕込んで置いた。 そして、大きな酒壺に差しておいた柄の付いたひょうたんで出来たひしゃくが、南風が吹くと北になびき、北風が吹くと南になびき、西風が吹くと東になびき、東風が吹くと西になびいていた。 私はそれを見て風流に楽しんでいたが、今はどうしてこの様な厳しい仕事をしなければならいのか？ と独り言をつぶやいた。 その時たまたま、みかどがとても大切に育てて居る姫宮がただ一人で簾の側にお立ちになって柱に寄りかかって様子をご覧になっていた。 姫宮はこの男の独り言を聞いて、その酒樽のひしゃくが風になびく様子にとても興味を持たれた。 いったいこの男の住んで居た武蔵の国で、酒樽に刺したひしゃくはどのようになびくのだろうか？きっとそれはさぞゆかしいに違いないと思った。 姫宮は簾を上げて、その男に近くに来るように言った。 男は恐れ多いと思ったが、近づいて高い廊下に立たれている姫宮の前に立った。 姫宮はお前が先ほど言った、武蔵の国の酒樽の話をもう一度私に聞かせなさい、と言った。 男は武蔵の国の酒樽の話を申し上げた。 すると、姫宮は男に、私を其処へ連れて行って、ひしゃくのなびく所をお見せなさい。きっとそのようにひしゃくがなびくのは、何か意味があるのでしょう。 と言った。 男はその様に姫宮がおっしゃるのは、もったいないことであり、恐れ多いと感じました。 しかし、その様になる前世からの因縁があったのでしょうか、男は姫宮を背負って、武蔵の国に向かいました。 もちろん、追手が来るだろうとは容易に想像出来ましたので、その夜、勢多の橋のたもとに姫宮を一時、降ろしたてまつって、その橋を一間位、打ち壊して、その後で男は姫宮をおぶった状態でその橋の壊れた部分を飛び越えて、七日七夜掛かって、武蔵の国に至りました。 みかどや皇后は姫宮が居ないことに気が付いて、心配してお探しになると、 宮中のある者が、武蔵の国から働きに来ている男が、首にたいそういい匂いのするものを掛けて、飛ぶように逃げて行きました。 と申し出ました。 そこで、そこでこの男を宮中で探してみましたが、男の姿はありませんでした。 そしてみかどの周辺では、この男は出身地の武蔵の国に向ったに違いない、という話になって、兵士と役人の一団を、武蔵の国に派遣することにしました。 派遣された一団が東へ向かっていると、勢多の橋まで来た時、橋の一部が壊れていて、荷物を運ぶ車などは簡単には渡ることが出来ずに、大変苦労しました。 そして使者は3か月目に入って、ようやく武蔵の国に入って、この男の所にたどり着きました。 その時、姫宮は朝廷からの使者を近くに呼んで言いました。 このようになるのは前世からの因縁があったのでしょう。 私がこの男の家をとても見たいと思って、男に命令して私をここに連れて来させたのです。 ここはとても住み午後地が良いように思われます。 この男が罪にとわれて処罰を受けるなら、私はどうしろと言うのですか？ と姫宮は言いました。 この様なことに至ったのは、このようになるような前世の因縁があったからでしょう。 お前たちは早く京の都に帰って、朝廷にこの旨を申し上げなさい。 と姫宮は言った。 使者は仕方なく、都へ帰ってみかどにその旨を、このようなことでした、と申し上げた。 すると みかどは、 仕方がない。その男を処罰しても、姫宮を取り返して、帰って来させることは出来ないだろう。 竹芝の男に生きている間はずっと、武蔵の国を分け与えて、その男には一切税金は課さないことにしよう。 ただ、姫宮にその国を与えることにしよう。 との命令を発布しました。 そこで使者は男の元に出かけて、その男と姫宮の住む家を京の宮殿の様に作り申し上げて、そこに二人を住まわせました。 そして姫宮などが他界されてから、そこをお寺に改修しました。 その寺の名前を竹芝寺といいます。 そして、その姫宮の産んだ子供たちは、武蔵という姓を頂戴致しました。 この一件があってからは、朝廷では火の番の仕事は女性にさせることに変更しました。』
