ITやプログラミング関連で、「プロトコル」というカタカナは目にしたことがあると思います。

protocolは「指示・手順」という意味で、guideline のようなニュアンスで、次のように使えます。

Police must follow strict protocols at a crime scene to make sure the evidence is not damaged or altered in any way.

（警察は犯罪現場で証拠が損傷されたり改ざんされたりしないよう、厳格な指示に従う必要がある。）

Medical professionals must adhere to a strict protocol when handling contagious diseases, implementing measures such as isolation, sterilization, and vaccination to prevent the spread of infections and safeguard public health.

（医療専門家は感染症の取り扱いにおいて厳格な手順に従い、隔離、滅菌、ワクチン接種などの対策を実施し、感染の拡散を防ぎ公衆衛生を守らなければならない。）

adhere to 「（規則などを）忠実に守る」も大事な単語ですので、合わせて覚えてみてください。
