①paucity

専門家によれば、日本の悲惨な成績は、このテーマ(=新型コロナウイルス)を研究する日本人研究者の数の少なさ、研究環境、他国と比較した相対的な資金不足に起因しているという。
※dismal=惨めな・pitifully bad
stem from~ = 〜に起因する
paucityの類語としてlackが使われていると思います。（大事な単語や概念は単語を変えて繰り返される）
②outcry

福島の汚染水問題で国内外から反発の声
※早速outcryという単語が使われています。ここでは「反発の声」のような意味と考えられます。何かに反対する（人々の）声、のような意味ですね。動詞にerupt（break out suddenly,突然起こる、巻き起こる の意か）を使っていますね。この汚染水の問題はしばらく前から問題になっていたようですね。
Japan’s neighbors and local fishermen blasted the government’s decision April 13 to release treated water from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant into the sea.
福島第一原発の処理水を海に放出するという4月13日の政府の決定に対して、日本の近隣諸国や地元の漁業者たちは非難した。
※outcryと似たような意味でblast(criticize)という単語が使われています。
Hiroshi Kishi, chairman of the Federation of Japan Fisheries Cooperatives, lashed out at the government in a statement released the same day, calling the decision “extremely regrettable and totally unacceptable.”
全日本漁業協同組合連合会の岸博司会長は同日発表した声明で、この決定を「極めて遺憾であり、到底容認できない」と非難した。
※ここでもoutcry, blastの流れで、lash out (criticize)があります。ライティングにおいて、これだけたくさん類語を使えると良いなと思います。
