Drawing on qualitative interviews conducted in the mid-2020s, the study considers participants’ accounts of working arrangements, living circumstances, pathways into the work, and future aspirations. The analysis focuses on (1) how individuals explain and justify their situations in the face of moral condemnation and ambiguous regulation, (2) what meanings they construct to sustain dignity, and (3) how they organize time and imagine possible futures. The findings suggest that participants’ narratives operate as practical coping strategies—for example, framing work through family responsibility, drawing on caregiving identities, setting short-term horizons, and managing proximity to informal support networks. These narrative practices help rework intersecting vulnerabilities related to age, gender, and mobility, making difficult circumstances more manageable even when underlying constraints remain.
