こんな点取り問題が ITP では出ることがあります。こういうものは 10 秒で正解してしまいましょう。
(第１文) アラスカパイプラインは...
(第２文) それは...
(第３文) それは...
と来ているのですから、「それ」は「アラスカパイプライン」に決まっています。ですから D. が正解です。この段落からは１パラグラフ１アイディア、すなわち、１つの段落には１つの内容しか書かないという原則を学びましょう。このパラグラフもそれに当てはまります。このパラグラフでは一貫してアラスカパイプラインの話だけをしています。
次のような文を考えるとわかりやすくなるかもしれません。「花子さんは昨日買い物に行きました。彼女はそこで掘り出し物を見つけました。彼女はそれを買って一日中幸せでした。」この後何回「彼女は」「彼女は」と続いてもその彼女とは花子さんを指します。この段落では花子さんの話しか書かないのが原則だからです。これも１パラグラフ１アイディアの原則です。
それでは復習です。太字を追いかけられてみてください。

数字とが見えればすぐに解ける問題だったのではないでしょうか。この段落の最終文にその数字がありました。

太字で示した 84 と daily を見ればほぼ間違いなく B. が正解だと見当が付きます。 84 million gallons of crude oil can be pumped through it
daily. とある。dailyとあるではないか! というわけです。
daily daily daily!!!!! 84 million gallons dailyなのだから、1日あたり84 million gallonsとわかるわけです。
この段落でも第１段落で示しました 問１と同内容の設問を作ることができます。これを 問３ として作ってみました。
問３ The word “it ” in the last sentence refers to __________

該当箇所を太字にしてみました。すると、この段落はアラスカパイプラインを形成する「鋼鉄製のパイプ」の話しかしていないことがわかります。１パラグラフ１アイディアですから、何度 It や its、it が出てこようがこの段落で主題になるのはその「鋼鉄製のパイプ」だけですから、選択肢で迷うことはありません。

もちろん、正解は D. というわけです。
TOEFL は確かに語彙力がものをいう試験で、単語の意味を知っているに越したことはないのですが、それが不足していても得点できる設問が散りばめられています。そういう問題をきっちりと取るだけでも starter としてはなかなか良い点が取れます。
