Vivianne Awlijo, 11,/ who/ enrolled/ at school/ through the chess 

programme,/ told/ the Guardian,/ “I /did not/ even /speak/ English/

when/ I/ started.” /She /now/ dreams of/ becoming/ a nurse.

Thanks to partnerships/ with companies,/ celebrities,/ governmental 

bodies/ and/ charitable donors,/ Chess in Slums, Africa /has,/ to date,/ secured/ lifelong scholarships/ for /more than/ 200 children/ and/ is 

continuing/ to expand/ its work.

the work of Chess in Slums, Africa.

トゥンデ・オナコヤは, CNN,アルジャジーラ、BBCなどの世界的なメディアが

チェスインスラムズアフリカの活動を取り上げ始めたとき、自分のビジョンが生活を変えることに気が付いた。

In an interview/ on the charity’s blog,/ he said,/ “We/ even/ had/

a feature /at the Olympics,/ and/ chess /is not /a sport at 

the Olympics!/ It/ became/ clear/ to me/ that/ we /were doing/

something phenomenal/ here. /I/ began/ to understand/ that/ this /

wasn’t /just chess/ anymore. It/ was /a humanitarian effort/

changing/ people’s perception /of /what/ charity /should be.”

チャリティーブログのインタビューで彼は「私たちはオリンピックの種目にできるような特色がありますが、チェスはオリンピックの種目ではありません！

自分にとしては、私たちが何か驚異的なことをここでやっている、ということがはっきりとしてきました。チェスは単なる「チェスというゲーム」ではないことを、理解し始めたのです。それは、人道主義の努力であり、慈善活動とはどうあるべきかということに対する人々の認識を変える物でした」と語った。
