これは先生がご自身で記事にしたお話しです。

The Guardian, BBC, News, Twitter （当時）, Instagram, chessinslumsafrica.com を元にした記事で、Episode 31です。

ちなみに先生はBritishなので、Americanとは違ったスペルもあります。

Episode 31, Pawns become Kings and Queens

How chess is bringing hope and humanity to Nigeria’s floating 

slums

チェスがナイジェリアの水上スラム街に希望と人間愛をもたらした訳

Ferdinand Maumo/ stood by/ the entrance/ to the training centre,/

transfixed/ by the activity/ inside /and oblivious to/ the mean taunts/ 

of the other kids.

フェルナンド・マウモは、トレーニングセンターの入り口で、他の子供たちの意地の悪いあざけりに気づきもせず、中で行われているイベントにくぎ付けになっていた。

The 10-year-old/ from the floating slums of Makoko/ in Lagos, Nigeria,/ was/ different /to them /and/ had long ago resigned/ himself /

to their juvenile cruelty.

ナイジェリアのラゴスの水上スラム街マココの１０歳のその子は、他の子供と違い、ずっと前から虐待を受けてきた。

Inside the centre,/ 30 youngsters/ were beginning/ an intensive /

two weeks/ of chess lessons/ arranged/ by the charity Chess in Slums, Africa.

センターの中では、30人の少年が、チャリティーチェスインスラムアフリカによる２週間の集中チェス授業を始めていた。

Noticing/ the commotion outside,/ one of the trainers/ brought him in,/ sat him down /and/ began /showing him/ the basics /of board 

arrangement /and /pawn movements.

外の騒ぎに気が付いて、一人のトレーナーが彼を中に招いて座らせ、配列の基本とポーンの動きを教え始めた。

Within minutes,/ the dreamy-eyed boy /with spastic cerebral palsy/ 

was outperforming/ everyone around him. 

数分のうちに、けいれん性脳性まひ持ちで、夢を見るような目をした少年は、

他の誰よりも優れた成績をおさめるようになっていた。

The founder /of Chess in Slums, Africa,/ Tunde Onakoya, /a young 

chess master/ whose own life/ had been transformed/ by his talent/ for the game,/ commented /at the time/ on Twitter,/

チェスオブスラムアフリカの創設者である若いチェスマスターのトゥンデ・オナコヤの人生は、チェスの才能によって一変している。彼はその時のツイッターにこのように投稿した。

 “ … He /doesn’t speak/ a word /of English /and /has never been/

 to school/ before,/ but/ today/ he /showed/ a /rare/ understanding /

of chess/ through/ pattern recognition.”

「彼（フェルナンド・マウモ）は、英語を一言も話さないし、学校にも行ったことが無いが、パターン認識を通してチェスに対する、まれにみる理解を示した」

Later the same day,/ he/ tweeted /“With tremendous burdens,/ often/ come/ enormous gifts.

同じ日のうちに、ツイッターに「すさまじい重荷は、よくものすごいギフト（能力）をもたらすものだ。

 I think/ Ferdinand/ just found/ his gift of chess /and /there’s /no limit

 to /what/ he/ can /attain/ with this.”

思うに、フェルナンドは今まさに、自信のチェスの能力を発見し、それをもって、成し遂げることに限界はない」とも投稿した。

Ferdinand/ went on/ to win/ the end of /course tournament/ and /

uttered /the first word/ he/ had ever spoken/ in English:/ “Champion.”

フェルナンドはトーナメントの終わりまで勝ち進み、初めての英語「チャンピオン」を口にした。

ああ。。。長い。。。(笑)
