窮屈なテスト環境 と自由な表現の難しさ What have we sarificed so far to maintain this "great" Japan?

塾で、問題の答えを書き込む枠【カッコ】（　　　）が狭いところがあって、そこに頑張って無理やり文字（communicateやimportantなど）を敷き詰めて書く生徒が大半なんですよ。講師が『ここのカッコは狭いから、はみ出して書いていいよ！』と言っても、

生徒は『・・・（無言）（だって枠に書かないといけないんでしょ？×になるんでしょ？）』と反応します。この「無理やりやらなきゃダメという空気感」がやばいなと思う。「書き切れないから、枠の外に書いたよ！」みたいな生徒が1人もいない。ある意味恐怖を感じる。そして自分も多分中学生の時、無理やり敷き詰めて書いたと思う。

今、ある程度おっさんになって、「大丈夫だよ」と思えるようになったけど。なんかテストの場ってこういう「萎縮させる空気」を常に感じる。仕方ないのかな。こういう環境で育って「ハイ、英語で自分の意見を自由に言ってみよう！（笑顔）」みたいなの色々無理すぎるな。英語力以前だな。と常々思う。治安の良さ。整理整頓された社会はできたけども。

At cram school, most students try to push their answers so tightly in the provided blanks, even if the blank is too small for the letters such as "communicate" or "important."

When I tell them "you can write beyond the blank so that you can fit your answer better", most of them remain silent and won't change the answer. They probably think they need to stay within the blank to avoid a 'wrong' mark.It is what it is. When I was at their age, I would probably have done the same thing. But now, in my 30s, I feel like "it's ok" and "to give an answer matters, but the form doesn't matter as much". 

I feel this suffocating atmosphere in test settings and if you grew up like this, it seems almost impossible to speak what you want to say in the English conversation classroom or outside classroom in English, even in Japanese. 

This is a matter of pre-English proficiency. Thanks to this regulated environment, Japan has reportedly become one of the cleanest and most organized societies in the world. But in terms of developing language proficiency and the ability to speak up, what have we sacrificed so far?
