The Buddha teaches that the fact that any consequence has its cause always holds true anytime and anywhere.
The law of cause and effect runs through the three worlds: the past (our lives before birth), the present (from birth to death), and the future (after death).
Our present suffering is one kind of karmic result from the past. As retribution for our bad deeds in the past, we are suffering in the present and our suffering will continue after death (the future).
Our reality is that we are stuck in an endless cycle of suffering, treading a tightrope from one fleeting dream to another. This is what Sakyamuni Buddha conveyed with his words: “Enter suffering from suffering, enter darkness from darkness.”
