They say “the end of a relationship is the end of money”. When you have money, people eagerly approach you, but when you don't have money, their attitude changes quite abruptly. It is usually money troubles that damage human relationships. Whether it is a friend or a lover, lending or borrowing money leaves a grudge. It's no wonder that people become obsessed with the idea of "if only I had money".
Sakyamuni described the reality of our desires as follows:
“He who has no field is distressed and wishes for one;
he who has no house is distressed and wishes for one.
He who owns a field is distressed about the field;
he who owns a house is distressed about the house.
It is no different with horses and other livestock, servants, money and treasure, food and clothing, and household goods:
having and not-having are the same.”
Whether we have them or not, we suffer all the same. Have-nots suffer from their lack; haves suffer from having the thing. Have-nots are bound with chains of iron, while haves are bound with chains of gold. The only difference is the material; either way, you are bound and handicapped.
