When illuminated by the Mirror of Dharma, we see that we humans are all the same: each a mass of blind passions (worldly desires).
If you look into your mind, you will see that it is full of five desires: to eat, to make money, to be popular, to be praised and to sleep. However, you hide them because it doesn’t look good if you openly show them.
We are all “false and deceitful.”
Master Shinran himself had struggled with the question of how to obtain true happiness while being assailed by the passions. He said:
“How grievous! As I, most foolish Shinran, am swallowed in the vast sea of lust and troubled by the great mountain of [desire for] fame and wealth…”(Master Shinran)
In other words, he said “Oh, how pathetic of me! My desire for fame and wealth is as enormous as a mountain, and it torments me constantly!”
Here Master Shinran spoke with remorse and anguish over how tormented he was by his own lust and desire for fame and wealth—yet simultaneously, he rejoiced that he had found true happiness.
Buddhism is all about how we can obtain that same true happiness despite being constantly troubled by our *five desires.

*Buddhism sums up all our desires into five:
-Desire for food (Wanting to eat and drink)
-Desire for wealth (Wanting money, possessions, etc.)
-Desire for love (Wanting intimate relations)
-Desire for fame (Wanting praise and recognition)
-Desire for sleep (Wanting rest and leisure)
