You can climb to the top of a mountain, but you cannot stay there for long. At the peak of happiness, you may wish that time would just stop. But the realities of life do not allow it.
Since our happiness is relative, or based on comparisons, ultimately, it is a competition. We feel reassured when we see people lagging behind us and anxious when we see others making better progress than us. So we’re always forced to compete with each other. We think, we will feel happiness if we overtake others, but then another battle begins soon after that. Success only brings temporary happiness.
Buddhism teaches that nothing in this world lasts, that we don’t know what will happen or when, and that things are here today, gone tomorrow. This is a world of impermanence.
