英作文演習～予備編⑲「仮定」

【本問題】次の日本文を英訳して下さい。

１、勿論、他に寄る所がおありなら、たってお引き止めは出来ませんが。

（参考）I'm sorry I can't stay. I have several other calls to make.

（解答例）Of course, I cannot force you to stay if you have other calls 

to make.

２、3時以後においでいただけたら、非常に好都合なのですが。

（解答例）It will be very convenient for me if you could come after 

three.

３、もし留守中に誰か来たら、夕方まで戻らないと言って下さい。

（解答例）If anyone should call during (あるいはin) my absence, tell him that I shall not be back till evening.

４、汽車はもう10分で（in about ten minutes）出ますから、私達は早くしないと乗り遅れましょう。（名古屋大学）

（解答例）Our train is starting in about ten minutes. We shall miss it if we don't hurry.

５、人によく思って（think well of）もらいたかったら、自分のことをよく言わぬことです。

（解答例）If you want people to think well of you, do not speak well of 

yourself.

６、金は、借りたら出来るだけ早く返すべきである。

（解答例）If you borrow money, you should pay it back as soon as you 

can (あるいはpossible).

７、雨が降りそうだから、外出するなら傘を持って行った方がいいでしょう。（水産大学校）

（解答例）It looks like rain. You had better take an umbrella with you if you are going out.

８、君に出来るなら、僕にだって出来るよ。

（解答例）If you can do it, so can I.

９、金をやれば、どんなことを頼んでも彼は引き受けます。

（解答例）If you give him money, he will do anything you ask him.

（参考）He would do anything for money.

10、君の言う通りだろうね。過ぎたことをくよくよ言っても始まらんし、それに僕が苦情（a complaint）を言っても、事態を悪くする（make matters 

worse）だけだろうからね。

（解答例）I suppose you're right; it's no use (あるいはgood) crying over spilt milk and it would only make matters (あるいはthings) worse if I 

made a complaint.

11、あなたが彼と結婚したら、自分自身の一生を台無しにする（wreck）ばかりか、彼の一生もメチャクチャにして（make a mess of）しまうでしょう。もう会ってはいけません。手紙を書くことも。

（解答例）If you married him you'd not only wreck your own life, but 

you'd make a mess of his too. You're not to see him again or write to 

him, either.

（解説）You are not to see～には相手の取るべき行動をこちらから示します（つまり、「命令」です）。You are not going to see～には話し手の「意志」が表われます。

12、もし僕が君だったら、そんなに不平ばかり言ってないな。もっと仕事に精を出し（work harder）、愚痴る（grumble）のを少なくしたっていいんだぜ（might～）。

（解答例）I shouldn't complain so much if I were you. You might work 

harder and grumble less.

13、頭のいい（bright）子だったから、その気になりさえすれば（put one's mind on～）、したいことは何でもできただろうにと思います。（東京工業大学）

（解答例）He was a bright boy and could have done anything he 

wanted if only he had put his mind on it.

14、5分早ければ汽車に間に合ったのに。

（解答例）If you had come five minutes earlier, you could have caught 

the train.

15、太陽の熱と光が無ければ、地上は真の闇と厳しい寒気に覆われ、あらゆる生物は死滅するであろう。

（解答例）①If it were not for (あるいはWere it not for, But for, Without) the light and heat of the sun, total darkness and intense cold would 

cover our earth and every living thing on it would perish.

②Without the sun’s light and heat, our earth would be a very dark and cold place and all living things would be dead.

16、彼にする気があればできるんだが。

（解答例）He could do it if he would.

17、君の援助があったら、もっとずっと早くこの仕事は出来ていたでしょう。

（解答例）If I had had (あるいはWith) your assistance, I could have 

finished this work much earlier.

18、彼女がもし僕を嫌っているなら、あんなことはしなかっただろう。

（解答例）She would not have done that if she disliked me.

（解説）裏を返せばShe did that because she likes me.となります。

19、君という人がいなかったら、今頃、僕はどうなっていたでしょう。

（解答例）Where should I be (now) (あるいはWhat would have become of me) if it hadn't been for you.

20、君が助けてくれなかったら、僕はどうしていたか分かりません。

（解答例）I don't know what I should have done without your help.

21、この巨船は、まるで一流ホテルのような感じを与えるほど、設備が良い。（東京都立大学）

（解答例）This huge ship (あるいはgiant liner) is so luxuriously 

accommodated (あるいはoffers such splendid comforts) that it makes 

one feel as if one were (あるいはone might be) in a first-class hotel.

22、まるで先が長くないようなお口ぶりですね。

（解答例）You talk as if you were not going to live long (あるいはyou 

had not long to live).

（参考）You talk like a fellow who doesn't think he's going to live long.

23、私が病気になると、母はまるで自分のことのように苦しみました。

（解答例）When I was ill, mother suffered as if my illness were her 

own.

24、一瞬、彼女は私が何かひどいこと（that shocked her）でも言ったような目つきで私を見た。

（解答例）She looked at me a moment as though (あるいはif) I had said something that shocked her.

（解説）提示の順序をas though I had shocked her by something I saidと比べてみましょう。

25、父が生きていて、今日の私の姿を見てくれたらなぁと思います。

（解答例）(How) I wish my father had lived to see me now!

（解説）From a happy yet often pensive child, he grew up to be (あるいはand become) a mild, quiet, unobtrusive boy.（たまたまgrew up into a～とも言えます。）

【参考用基本文例】「仮定」の表わし方

１、明日、もし雨が降れば家におります。

If it rains tomorrow, I shall stay at home.

（参考）「条件」に対して「帰結」の受け方に注意しましょう。

If you go out in the rain without an umbrella,

you get wet of course.（もちろん濡れるに決まっている）

you will get wet.（先の事柄の推測）

you would get wet and catch cold.（濡れて、もしかしたら風邪をひくかもしれない、よりも実現の可能性は希薄です。）

次のような場合は「AならばBなり」の感じです。

If you are right, I am wrong.

If I'm fool, you are an idiot.（俺がバカなら、貴様はアホウ。）

If love is blind, hate has a thousand eyes.（惚れていればアバタもエクボ、憎しみは千の目玉で少しのあらも見逃さぬ。）

２、君が行かないなら僕も止めます。

If you do not go, neither shall I.

３、口外しないと約束すれば秘密を教えてあげるがね。

I'll tell you a secret if you will promise not to repeat it.

（解説）「未来」ではなく、「意志」「意向」を示します。

４、お父さんの身に万が一のことがあったら、君はどうしますか。

What would you do if anything should happen to your father?

５、太陽が西から昇るようなことがあっても、私の決心は変わりません。

If the sun were to rise in the west, I would not change my mind (あるいはresolution).

６、生まれ変わるとしたら、君は男に生まれて来たいか、それとも女か、どっち。

If you could be born again, which would you rather be―a man or a 

woman?

（参考）She should have been born a man.（男に生まれて来るべきだった。）

７、私がどんな思いをしたか分かれば、君はきっと同情してくれるよ。

If you knew what I had gone (あるいはbeen) through, you would surely pity me.

８、僕が君だったらそんなこと気にしないよ。

I shouldn't worry about that if I were you.

９、僕の立場だったら、君、どうしただろう。

What would you have done in my place?

（解説）if you had beenが前に了解されています。What would you have 

done?のyouに強勢を置けば、「君だったら」の意味となります。

10、君がいなかったら、彼はきっと溺死していたよ。

If you had not been there, he must have been drowned.

11、10時20分の急行に乗ったとすれば、もう今頃は着いていいはずだ。

He ought to be here by now if he had taken the 10:20 express.

12、太陽の熱が無ければ、如何なる生物も生存していくことはできないであろう。

If it were not for (But for, Without) the heat of the sun, no living thing 

could exist.

13、君の援助がもし無かったら、彼は今日のような成功をしていなかったかもしれません。

If it had not been for (But for, Without) your support, he might not 

have been as successful as he is today.

14、お医者さんの言いつけを守らないと、病気は治りませんよ。

You won’t get well unless you follow your doctor’s advice.

15、まるで夢を見ているような心地でした。

I felt as if I were in a dream.

16、何も別に恥ずかしいことをやったわけでもなし。

It isn't as if you had done anything to be ashamed of.

（参考）It isn't as if you were poor.

「それ以前に終わった行為、存在していた状態」を言いたい時だけ、過去完了の形を使います。wishの場合も同じです。

It seemed to me as if everybody were laughing at me behind my back.

It seemed to me as if everybody had known the secret all along.（はじめから）

They soon began to talk as though they had been friends for years.

17、１時間後には彼は何事も無かったかのように静かに本を読んでいた。

An hour later, he was calmly reading a book as if nothing had 

happened.

18、何日も何も食べていないかのように、その子はガツガツ食べた。

The child ate as hungrily as if he had eaten nothing for days.

19、自分の部屋が僕、あったらなぁ。

I wish I had a room of my own.

（参考）I wish I could change places with you.

20、生まれてこなけりゃよかった、死ねたらなぁ、と彼は思った。

He wished he had never been born; he wished he could die (あるいは

were dead).

21、言わないでおけばいいのにという事をいくつか言ったよ、君。

You said things that would have been better (left) unsaid.

（参考）It is a pity you cannot stay until Saturday when you could have seen the fireworks.（花火大会をごらんいただけましたものを。）
