【本問題】次の日本文を英訳して下さい。

１、ハエを食物の上にとまらせることがどんなに危険なことかを知らない人は、ハエが近づかないようにしておく手数を面倒くさがる（think it too 

much trouble to～）。

（解答例）People who do not know how dangerous it is to let flies settle on food, think it too much trouble to keep the flies (あるいはthem) 

away.

２、目の前でお世辞を言うような人は、とかく陰で悪口を言うものだ。（神戸外国語大学）

（解答例）Those who tell you nice things (あるいはflatter you) to your 

face are apt to speak ill of you behind your back.

３、金が無くても満足している人と、あっても満足していない人と、どちらが幸福だと君は思いますか。

（解答例）Which do you think is happier, a person (あるいはone) who is poor but content(ed) or a person (あるいはone) who is rich but 

discontent(ed)?

（解説）後半はa poor man who is contented or a rich man who is 

discontentedとしてもよいです。

４、誰だって不正直な人は信用しないものです。

（解答例）Nobody will trust a man who is dishonest.

５、向こうに見える赤屋根の2階建てが僕のおじの家です。

（解答例）The two-storied building whose red roof you see over there is my uncle's house.

（参考）That mountain the top of which (あるいはwhose top) you see 

over there is Mt. Aso.

６、あなたのお役に立つ（be of use to you）かもしれないと思う本を、私は1、2冊（a couple of books）持っています。お送りいたしましょうか。（電気通信大学）

（ヒント）「～と思う」（I think）をどこに入れるかに注意して下さい。

（解答例）I have a couple of books which I think might be of use to 

you. Shall I send them (to youは省略)?

（解説）mightは「あるいはひょっとすると」の含みです。

７、長い間、便りの無かったいとこから、昨日、手紙が来た。

（解答例）①I got a letter yesterday from my cousin, from whom I had not heard for a long time.

②Yesterday I received a letter from my cousin after a long absence.

８、青年がまず第一に知るべき大切なことは、自分は何も知らないということである。（名古屋工業大学）

（解答例）The first important lesson (that) a young man should learn is that he knows nothing.

16、ビタミンCは体に非常に大切で、それが欠けると（without which）歯がゆるみ（become loose）、手足がなえます（become weak）。

（解答例）Vitamin C is very important to the body, without which our 

teeth become loose and our arms and legs (becomeを繰り返さず省略) 

weak.

17、夏の食べ物には十分注意しなければなりません。

（解答例）We must be very careful of what we eat and drink in summer(-time).

18、テレビの番組で（in the television）、ニュースを読んでいるアナウンサーを画面で（on the screen）眺めていなければならない、然るべき理由があるのだろうか。

【参考用基本文例】「関係詞」の用い方

１、誰のこともよく言うような男は決して信用するな。

Never trust a man who speaks well of everybody.

２、若い時には前途有望であったが、中年になって、その期待を果たさなかった人達が世間にはいっぱいいる。

The world is full of people who were promising as young men but who haven't, in middle age, fulfilled their promise.

３、その生活が一個の虚偽である人間に、本当のことを言っても無駄。

It is no use telling the truth to people whose life is a lie.

４、その過去について何も知らない人を信用するのは危険だ。

It is dangerous to trust a man of whose past you know nothing.

17、私は人力の限りを尽くしました。

I don't want to do anything (that) I'll regret.

（参考）I regret nothing I've done.

I'm not sorry (あるいはhave no regrets) for what I have done.

19、それについて知っていることを全部話したまえ。

You must tell me all (that) you know about it.

20、男子と同種類の仕事をする婦人は、男子と同じ賃金をもらうべきである。

A woman who does the same work as a man should get the same pay as a man.

（参考）Frankly, I'm of the same opinion as you (あるいはof your

opinion).

21、何とも言えずうれしいことに、彼は以前と変わらぬ謙虚な人であることが分かった。

I found him, to my unspeakable joy, the same humble man that he had always been before.

（参考）次のthatもこの形容詞節で「補語」の役目です。

I owe everything that I am to him.（今の私の全ては彼のおかげ。）

She could not believe that he should be the same man (that) she knew ten years ago.（これは「目的語」の役目です。）

22、彼は正しいと思うことをやる勇気を持っている。

He has the courage to do what he thinks is (あるいはhe believes to be) 

right.

（参考）She is an entirely different woman from what we all think she 

is.

I'm a little better than you think I am.（君が考えているより少しはましな人間。）

（解説）次の二つの言い方を比べて、whatの使い方を身につけましょう。

The neighborhood is no longer what it used to be. It is a noisy place 

now.

The neighborhood is no longer the quiet place that it used to be.

23、あなたは自分が子供の頃を過ごした家を覚えていますか。

Do you remember the house where you spent your childhood years?

24、もう少しお暇な時に出直しましょう。

I will come some other time when you are less busy.

25、私の故郷の村は、今日でも20年程前、私が子供であった頃とほとんど変わっておりません。
