【本問題】次の日本文を英訳して下さい。

１、金が幸福を連れて来るとでも、お前、思うのかい。

（解答例）Do you think (that) money brings happiness?

２、彼はそうすると約束はしましたが、だからといって実行するわけではありませんよ。

（解答例）He has promised to do it, but that does not mean that he will do it.

（参考）Promise me that you will say nothing of this to anybody else.（このことは他の誰にも言わないと約束しなさい。）

３、この前（the last time）、君にはもう決して金は貸さないと言ったじゃないか。君は僕にまだ2万円も借りがある（owe）のを忘れるなよ。

（解答例）I told you the last time (that) I would never lend you money again, didn’t I? Don’t forget (that) you still owe me (as much as) 

twenty thousand yen.

４、ご成功を切に祈ります。

（解答例）①I do hope (that) you will succeed.

②I wish you success from the bottom of my heart.

５、もう2、3日天気が続いてくれればよいと思います。

（解答例）I (do) hope it will keep fine for a few days more

６、オートメ―ションが第2の産業革命を招来した（bring about）と言っても、おそらく過言ではあるまい。

（解答例）It would not be too much to say that automation brought 

about “a second industrial revolution.”

７、「お母さんは気分がすぐれないって言ってるぜ。」「そう？どこが悪いんだろう。」

（解答例）”Mother says she isn’t feeling well.” “Does she? What (do you think) is wrong with her? (あるいはWhat’s the matter with her?)”

（参考）What is she suffering from?

８、そのような困難な仕事は誰も1人ではできないだろうと思います。

（解答例）I don’t think anyone can do such a difficult work alone.

９、じきに晴れると思いますか。

（解答例）Do you think it will clear up soon.

10、彼がどうなったか（what became of him）は全くの謎（a complete 

mystery）なのです。

（解答例）What become of him is a complete mystery.

11、彼はいくつだと思いますか。

（解答例）①How old do you think he is?

②How old do you take him to be?

（参考）Can you guess how old he is (あるいはhis age)?

What do you think I ought to (あるいはshould) do about it?

12、我が国の人口は毎年どのくらいの率（at what rate）増加するか、ご存知ですか。

（解答例）Do you know at what rate our population increases every 

year?

13、彼はどこへ行くともいつ帰るとも私に言いませんでした。

（解答例）He did not tell me where he was going or when he would be back.

14、言い忘れましたが、来週の土曜日は約束（engagement）が2、3ありましてね。

（解答例）I forgot to say that I have a couple engagements for next 

Saturday.

（解説）forgotとなっていても、そう言っているのは「現在」であるので、

haveをhadにしなくてよいです。

15、彼がうんと言うかどうか怪しいものだが、ともかく当たってみよう。

（解答例）I very much doubt whether he will say yes (あるいはconsent), but anyhow I will ask him.

16、金持ちには貧乏とはどんなものか分からない。

（解答例）The rich do not know (あるいはhave no idea) what it is to be poor.

（参考）He does not know what it is to be afraid (あるいはthe meaning of fear).

17、明日、午後10時に着く、と電報を打った。（北海道大学）

（解答例）①I have sent a telegram saying that I shall arrive at ten 

tomorrow night.

②I sent a telegram saying that I should (あるいはwould) arrive 

tomorrow evening at ten.

（参考）I had a letter from my mother today in which she says she is 

coming up to Tokyo tomorrow fortnight.（再来週の明日）

18、金が少ししかなかろうがたくさんあろうが、そんなことは問題ではない（does not matter）。大切なのは（what counts）現に持っている金（the money you do have）をどう使うかである。

（解答例）Whether you have a little money or a lot does not matter. 

What counts is how you see the money you do have.

（参考）次の場合は副詞節の働きです。

Whether or not we agree with all he says, the reasonableness of his 

arguments must be admitted.

19、子供の頃、私は地球が他のどの天体よりも大きいと思っていた。

（解答例）When (あるいはI was) a child, I used to believe that the earth was larger than any other heavenly body (あるいはthe largest of all the heavenly bodies).

20、あの紳士には前にどこかで会った覚えがあるが、どこだったか、どうしても思い出せない。

（解答例）I remember seeing (あるいはhaving seen) that gentleman 

somewhere before, but I cannot, for the life of me, remember (あるいは

recollect) where it was.

（解説）for the life of me（どんなに必死に努力しても、どうしても）は直訳すれば「私の命が懸かっているとしても」という意味で、否定文で否定を強調するために用いられる言い方であり、少々大げさな言い方です。

21、どんなに値段は高く（expensive）ても構わん。この店にある、一番いいのをもらおう。

（解答例）I don’t care how expensive it is. I’ll have the best one you 

have (in this shop).

（参考）You know how fond I am of reading.

I know how proud your mother is of you.

【参考用基本文例】応用範囲の広い「名詞節」

１、貴君が入学試験に合格するかどうかは、一に貴君自身の努力にかかっているのです。

Whether you will pass the entrance examination or not depends 

primarily on your own exertions.

（参考）Health is largely dependant upon the condition of the mind.

２、私の両親の喜びは容易にご想像願えるでしょう。

How delighted my parents were can easily be imagined.

（参考）もちろん、You can easily imagine how～でもよいです。

３、人が君のことを何と言おうとかまやしない。

It does not matter what people say of you.

４、あわてて結婚し、後でゆっくりほぞをかむ例は、世間によくあります。

It often happens that one who marries in haste repents at leisure.

５、新聞はその日その日の世界の歴史であると言われているが、至言である。

It has rightly been said that the newspaper is a daily history of the 

world.

（参考）A bear does nothing to a dead man, I hear.

The landscape, they say, has a charm all its own.

６、この規則には多くの例外があることは言うまでもありません。

It goes without saying that (あるいはNeedless to say,) there are many 

exceptions to this rule.

７、人がも皆、君に反感を持っているなどと思い込んではいけない。

You shouldn't get it into your head that everybody's against you.

８、実は朝から何も私は食べていないのです。

The fact is that I have eaten nothing since morning.

（解説）Thatを省いて、The fact is, I have eaten nothing since morning.のように言うことが多いです。

９、彼女の唯一の難点は正直すぎる点だ。思っていることを何でもぶちまけないと気がすまない。

The only trouble with her is that she is too honest. She has to blurt out whatever she thinks.

10、ご全快の早からんことを祈ります。

I hope (that) you will soon be well again.

（解説）現在形のことも多いです。I hope you stay with us all summer.

I hope you have (あるいはI wish you) a nice trip.

（参考）I hope nothing has happened to him.

11、彼の汽車は正午着だと思いますが、確かとは言えません。

I think (that) his train arrives at noon, but I am not sure.

12、彼は、うそを言ったことは生まれてこの方あるまい。

I don't think he's ever told a lie in his life.

（参考）I hope I'm not disturbing you.（お邪魔ではないでしょうね。）

13、正直が最上の策であるとは、私は信じません。

I don't believe that honesty is necessarily the best policy.

（参考）「部分否定」の例です。

Such things do not happen every day.

The cleverest boys at school do not always succeed best in after life.

14、それに対して彼は何と言ったと思う？

What do you think he said to that?

（参考）Who (あるいはWhat) does he think he is, ordering us about?（人をあごで使ったりして、自分を何様だと思っているのだろう。）

15、僕の体重、どのくらいか見当がつきますか。

Can you guess how much I weigh (あるいはmy weight).

16、教えることがどんなに大切な仕事か悟るには、教師も学校も無い世界を想像してみるだけでよい。

To realize how important a job teaching is, you have only to (あるいは

need only) imagine a world without teachers or schools.

17、彼がどうなっていくのかと、しばしば考えます。

I often wonder what's going to become of him.

（参考）I wonder what kind of childhood he had.

I wondered if anything had happened to you on the way.

18、目の色、声音で、人が本当のことを言っているかどうか、分かる時もあります。

We sometimes know whether a man is telling the truth by the look in 

his eye, or the sound of his voice.

（参考）You don't know whether he is or is not angry.

You don't know whether he is guilty or not.

You don't know whether or not he is guilty.

19、明日までに仕上がるかどうか自信は無いが、まあやってみましょう。

I doubt (あるいはam not certain) whether I can finish it by tomorrow 

but I will try.

20、何かものを買う前には、これは無くても済みはしないかと、一応胸に問うてみるがいい。

Before buying anything you had better ask yourself whether you could not do without it.

21、誰か玄関に人が来ましたよ。誰だか行って見て下さい。

There's someone at the door. Will you go and see who it is?

22、人中でのふるまいを観察すれば、その人について多くのことが分かる。

You can learn a lot about a person by observing how he behaves in 

company.

23、お別れをどんなにお名残惜しく思っているか、口では申せません。

I can't say (あるいはYou don't know) how sorry I am that you are 

eaving us.

24、彼は行き先や、また、いつ頃戻るのか、言いませんでした？

Didn't he say where he was going or when he would be back?

（参考）I was very careful not to say anything that might hurt his pride.

I was afraid you might have been taken ill.

25、全くお先真っ暗だったのです。

We really didn't know what was before us.

26、昔の人は地球は平たいものだと信じていた。

People used to believe that the earth was flat.

27、地球は動くとガリレオは主張した。

Galileo maintained that the earth moves.

28、行くべきかどうか、まだ迷っているのです。

I am still in two minds whether I should go or not.

（参考）Now I've made up my mind what I'll do.
