英作文演習～予備編⑫「不定詞②」

【本問題】次の日本文を英訳して下さい。

１、この本を昨日、君に返すつもりでいたのですが、忘れました。

（解答例）I intended to have returned this book to you yesterday, but I forgot.

２、彼は何を、いつ、どうすべきかを知っている。

（解答例）He knows what to do, when to do, and how.

（参考）①I don’t know what to think now.

②I don’t know whether to believe him or not.

３、結局、頼れるのは自分だけなのです。

（解答例）After all, you have only yourself to depend on.

４、一生は一度しかない。

（解答例）We have only one life to live (あるいはlive only once).

５、何も心配することはありません。

（解答例）You have (あるいはThere’s) nothing to worry about.

（参考）The fire was put out quickly and there was no need to ask the 

fire department for help.

６、今晩は別に君、これって用事が無いんだろう。

（解答例）You haven’t anything particular to do this evening, have you?

７、暇だったので、新聞を繰り返し繰り返し読んだ。（慶應義塾大学）

（解答例）There being nothing else to do, I read the newspaper over 

and over again.

８、日本の木造家屋は住むには快適だが、すぐに火がつきやすいのが欠点だ。（東京大学）

（解答例）The Japanese wooden house is very comfortable to live in (あるいはas a dwelling), but the trouble with it is that it is liable to catch 

fire and burn.

９、そんないい環境で（in such nice environment）勉強できるなんて、（自分は）幸せだとお感じになりませんか。

（解答例）Don’t you feel yourself lucky to be able to study in such nice environment?

（参考）Don’t you think yourself fortunate to have obtained such an 

excellent position?

10、それだけの仕事を、土曜までにどうして終えた（get through）らいいんだ。誰にだって無理だ。

（解答例）How am I to get through all this work by Saturday? Nobody 

can.

11、家へ帰りかけようとした矢先に、雨がどしゃぶりに降り出した。

（解答例）I was just about to go home, when it began to rain in 

torrents.

12、彼をあんなに怒らせるなんて、あんた、何を言ったの？

（解答例）What did you say to him, to make him so angry?

13、ずっと歩いて来られたとは、なかなか健脚でいらっしゃいます（be a 

good walker）ね。

（解答例）You must be a (pretty) good walker to have walked all the 

way.

（参考）He must be (あるいはhave been) very angry with you to talk 

like that.

What a nice man he must be (あるいはhave been) to know.（このknowはget acquainted withの意味です）

14、書籍部（the book department）を通って行く途中、何年も会わなかった旧友に出くわしてびっくりしました。

（解答例）14、As I was (あるいはWhile) going through the book 

department, I was surprised to meet (あるいはcome across) an old 

friend of mine, whom I hadn’t seen for years.

（解説）I met, to my surprise, an old…と比べて下さい。

15、あまりにも寒くて寝付かれませんでした。

（解答例）It was far too cold for me to sleep (あるいはget to sleep).

16、本当の事を言うと、他のあれやこれやで忙しかったため、そのことはすっかり忘れていました。

（解答例）To tell you the truth, I have been so busy with other things (あるいはone thing and another) that I forgot all about it.

17、彼を知っている人なら誰でも、付き合い（get along with）づらい男だと言いますよ。

（解答例）Anyone who knows him well will tell you he is a difficult man to get along with.

（解答例）It being rush hour, the bus was awfully crowded (あるいは

crammed) and there was no vacant seat to be found.

（解答例）Such men are to be pitied rather than hated.

20、常識からもこの女性は信用できぬと分かっていたが、彼女にひかれていく自分をどうすることもできなかった。

（解答例）My common sense told me that this woman was not to be 

trusted, and yet I could not help myself being drawn to her.

21、やっぱり彼に会ってみた方がいいよ。どんな言い訳があるか、聞くだけでもね。

（参考）Is that all you have to tell me?→Have you nothing more to tell me?

（解答例）You had better see him after all, just to hear what excuse he has to make.

【参考用基本文例】英作文に頻繁に用いる「不定詞」の用例②

１、もう自分の始末はつけていい年だよ、君は。

You are old enough now to take care of yourself.

２、そんなことをしたらまずいよ。

You would be unwise to do so.

３、実を言うと、奴の顔を見るのも嫌なのです。

To tell the truth, I hate the very sight of him.

４、話を聞いていると、こいつ、頭がおかしいんじゃないかと思うよ。

To hear him talk, you would think he was a bit queer in the head.

（補足）Listening to him,でもよいでしょう。wasはwouldに合わせたものです。

５、不思議なことに、部屋は空っぽだった。

Strange to say, the room was empty.

６、彼はまあ、いわば大きな赤ん坊ですよ。

He is, so to speak, a grown-up baby.

７、ケチとまではいかないが、彼女は相当な始末屋だ。

She is very frugal, not to say stingy.

（参考）He has had no education to speak of.（教育というほどのものは受けていない。）

Oh, it's nothing to boast of.（いや自慢するほどのことじゃありません。）

８、ほんのちょっとした風邪です。何も心配することはありません。

It's just a mild cold. There's nothing to worry about.

９、試験問題を作るにはうってつけの材料だね、ここから。

This is very good material to make examination questions out of.

（参考）I haven't any one but you to depend upon.

10、で、葬式はいつの予定なのですか。

And when is the funeral to be?

（参考）Let me know when you are to arrive.（到着御予定の時刻）

The meeting is at five.（会は5時からです。take placeの意味です）

The soundest and best sleep is (あるいはoccurs) during the second hour after going to sleep.

11、ジョンは、父親の計画ではピアニストになるところだった。

John, according to his father's plans, was to be a pianist.

12、彼女は私についてくるはずだったが、いざとなって気が変わり、そのままホテルに滞在を続けることに決めた。

She was to have accompanied me, but at the last minute she changed her mind and decided to stay on at the hotel.

13、この家は貸家ですか。

Is this house to let?

（参考）These exhibits are not for sale.（ここに陳列してある品。）

14、一体俺達はどうしたらいいんだ。

What on earth are we (ought we) to do?

15、時間通りに行くのなら、タクシーに乗らねば。

You'll have to take a taxi if you are to be on time.

16、これは誰が悪いのだ。

Who is to blame for this?

17、お世辞を言う人間は当てにならない。

Flatterers are not to be trusted.

18、その翌朝、私はパリに向けて発つ予定だった。

I was due (scheduled) to leave the next morning for Paris.

19、切符を買おうとして、財布が無いのに気がついた。

I was about to buy a ticket, when I missed my purse.

20、よかれかしと祈る他、仕方がありませんでした。

There was nothing for it but to hope for the best.

（解説）the bestはthe best resultの意です。反対はthe worstです。

I am prepared for the worst.（万一の覚悟はできている。）

21、彼の妙ちきりんな様子を見て、笑わずにはおれませんでした。

I could not but laugh (help laughing) at his funny appearance.

22、彼のような地位の男にとって、女房に逃げられるのはさぞかし痛手だろう。

It must be an awful blow to a man in his position to have his wife run away.

（参考）get somebody to do somethingのgetはinduce, prevail uponの含意です。

It would be impossible to get them to listen to reason.

23、どうしても彼の決心は変わらないだろう。

Nothing will make him change his mind.

24、自発的にやったのか、意志に反してやらされたのか、どちらだ。

Did you do it of your own free will or were you made to do it against 

your will?

（参考）know somebody do somethingの受身形にも注意して下さい。

We never knew him do a mean thing.→He was never known to do a 

mean thing.（彼がけちな真似をしたためしを知らなかった。）

As far as we knew, he never did a generous deed.

25、おやジョンか、入ってくるのが聞こえなかったよ。

Oh, it's you, John. I didn't hear you come in.

（参考）He did not hear me even when I entered the room.

始動から終了までの「動作」です。特にそれが瞬間的な場合は不定詞、「継続」が意識される場合には現在分詞です。

I never heard them quarrel in all the years I lived with them.

Didn't you hear them quarreling last night?

I really do hate to see women drink at all.

I was shocked to see her drinking like this.

I had only seen him angry once or twice in all the three years I had 

worked with him.（状態）

26、その時、遠くで誰かが助けを求めて大声で叫ぶのが聞こえた。

Just then someone was heard to call out for help in the distance.
