英作文演習～予備編⑪「不定詞①」

【本問題】次の日本文を英訳して下さい。

１、長生きは万民の願うところであるが、老人になりたがる（would～）者はいない。

（解答例）To live long is the desire of all men (あるいはEvery man 

desires to live long), but no man would be old.

２、外国語を学ぶのに最も良い方法は、その言葉を話す国民の間に入って生活することである。

（解答例）The best way of learning (あるいはto learn) a foreign 

language is to go and living among the people who speak it.

３、風邪を引いた時には、すぐに寝込んで暖かにしているのが一番です。（東京都立大学）

（解答例）The best thing you can do when you have caught cold is to 

get into bed at once and stay there keeping yourself warm.

４、教育の最も重要な目的の一つは、私達に自分でものを考えることを教えることだ。

（解答例）One of the most important aims of education is to teach us to think for ourselves.

（参考）You must learn to think for yourself.

５、我々が外国語を学ぶ主な目的は、外国人の思想・感情を正しく理解することである。（東京外国語大学）

（解答例）Our primary object in learning a foreign language is to have (あるいはgain) an accurate (あるいはa right) understanding of the

６、ちょうどお金の持ち合わせが少しも無いのです。

（解答例）①I do not happen to have any money with me.

②I have no money with me, as it happens.

７、僕は金持ちにも有名にもなりたくありません。ただ、何かやりがいのある（worth-while）ことがしたいのです。

（解答例）I don’t want to be rich or famous (あるいはeither fame or

８、どういうわけか（for some reason or other）、彼女は自分の家のことを話したがらない風なんです。

（解答例）She doesn’t seem to be (over)anxious to talk about her 

family, for some reason or other.

９、彼は僕を弟と間違えたらしい。

（参考）I took him for a clergyman.

（解答例）He seems to have mistaken me for my (younger) brother

10、彼はあまり変わったようには見えなかった。

（解答例）He did not seem to have changed much.

11、こんなにお手数をおかけしてどうも申しわけありません。

（解答例）I am very sorry to have given you so much trouble.

（参考）I’m sorry to be giving you so much trouble.

（解説）sorry for～ingとも言います。

12、所信をはばからず述べる勇気のある人が、私達の中で何人いるでしょう。

（参考）How little imagination you have!（君って想像力が無いんだなあ。）

13、いつも健康で長患い（a long spell of illness）など1度も経験せず、高齢に達する（live to an old age）幸運な人もいる。

（解答例）Some people are fortunate enough to have (あるいはenjoy) 

good health always and live to an old age without ever having a long 

spell of illness.

（解説）an old ageはa ripe old ageとも言います。

14、嫌ですと言うだけの気力（strength of mind）が私には無かった。断れば恩知らず（ungrateful）と思われるのを恐れたのです。

（解答例）I had not enough strength of mind (あるいはcould not find 

the power in me) to say no. I was afraid to seem (あるいはbe thought) ungrateful if I refused.

15、「早口でしゃべろうとすると、どうもどもるんです。」「僕もそうです。」

（解答例）”I am apt to stammer when I try to speak fast.” ”So am I.”

（参考）I consented, and so did he.

16、そんなことをするなと今までにもう何回言ったことか、ダメだな、お前って。

（解答例）How many times have I told you not to do that?(あるいは!) 

You are hopeless.

17、「ご面倒ですが、この手紙を投函していただけませんか。」「承知しました。」

（解答例）”May (あるいはMight) I trouble you to post this letter for me?” ”Yes, certainly.”

（解説）What a forgetful creature I am! I’ve forgotten to post your 

letter.

18、この仕事を月末までに間違いなく仕上げてもらいたい。（津田塾大学）

（解答例）I want you to get this work done by the end of this month 

without fail.

19、人に考えてもらうのは嫌いなんです。

（解答例）I don’t like to have others think for me.

20、一等で旅行する（travel first class）なんて、私の財布が許しません。

（解答例）I cannot afford to travel first-class.

【参考用基本文例】英作文に頻繁に用いる「不定詞」の用例①

１、知っていることと教えることとは全く別。

To know is one thing, and quite another to teach.

（参考）He is not the type of man who says one thing and means 

another.（口と腹が別。）

２、私は（彼に）8時までに行っていると約束した。

I promised (him) to be there by eight.

３、他の人がやっていないことを何かやりたい。

I want to do something no one else has done.

（解説）I want you to do～とやれば、やるのは「君」となります。

４、遊んでなどいられない。

I can't afford to be idle.

５、誰だって人に悪く言われるのは嫌です。

Nobody likes to be spoken ill of.

（参考）Do you like to read novels with happy endings?

Do you like novels to have happy endings?

６、何とお礼を申し上げてよいやら。

I don't know how to thank you.

（参考）You don't know how grateful I am to you for all the help you've given me.

I can't thank you enough for all you've done for me.

７、僕の聞いたところでは、彼は重態らしい。

From what I hear, he seems to be seriously ill.

（参考）My house must seem (to be省略) very small compared with 

yours.

８、何か言おうとしている風だったが、言葉が出てこなかった。

He seemed to be trying to say something, but no words came.

９、この前、10年前に会った時と君は少しも変わっていない感じだよ。

You don't seem to have changed a bit since I saw you last, ten years 

ago.

10、「お体には異状があるようには思えませんがね」と、医者は私の胸の打診に取りかかりながら言った。

"There doesn't seem to be anything the matter with you," said the

（解説）つまり、"As far as I can see, you are all right."ということです。

11、たまたまその日は日曜日だったので、来る列車は休日を楽しむ人達で混んでいた。

The day happened to be a Sunday, and the trains were crowded with 

holiday-makers.

12、彼は無知が人間の最大の敵だと信じていた。

He believed ignorance to be man's great enemy.

We hurried so as not to be late.

25、気分が滅入って何も食べたくなかった。

（参考）I felt so depressed that I could not bring myself to eat 

anything.（そんなに食べる気になれなかった。）

You're much too young to be married yet.

26、そんなことをするほど馬鹿じゃないよ、僕は。

I am not so foolish (あるいはsuch a fool) as to do that.

（解説）I'm not such a fool as you take me for.（僕は君が思っているような馬鹿じゃない。）
