英作文演習～予備編⑩「分詞」

【本問題】次の日本文を英訳して下さい。

１、迫ってくる試験のこと（the thought of）が私の心にのしかかって

（hung over me）、気持ちが悪かった。心配で夜、よく眠れなかった。

（解答例）The thought of the approaching examination hung over me 

uncomfortably. I could not sleep well at night, being worried (あるいは

worrying) about it.

２、見たまえ、あの雪に覆われた遠山の美しいこと。

（解答例）Look! How beautiful that distant snow-covered mountain is!

３、この手紙を書留にしていただけませんか。

（解答例）Will you (あるいはMight I trouble you to) have this letter 

registered?

４、家へ帰るまで、財布を盗られたのに気がつかなかった。

（解答例）It was not until I got home that I found I had had my purse 

stolen.

５、その時計、どこで修繕なさったのですか。

（解答例）Where did you have your watch mended?

（参考）A week ago I had a hundred dollars saved, but spent it all on 

drink. I am now without a cent.（「100万ドル貯めていた」状態）

６、この時計は5年前に買ったのですが、まだ1度も修繕させたことがありません。

（ヒント）「5年前に買って以来」と考えます。

（解答例）I have never had this watch mended since I bought it five 

years ago.

７、ああいった人間だから、過ぎたことは過ぎたことに（let bygones be 

bygones）できないのです。

（ヒント）Do you know the sort (あるいはwhat sort) of man he is?

（解答例）Being the sort of man (あるいはperson) he is, he cannot let

bygones be bygones.

（解説）let bygones be bygonesはforget and forgiveの意です。

８、そんな週刊誌（weeklies）を買ったりして、君は金を捨てているようなものだ。

（解答例）You are throwing away money buying those weeklies.

９、彼はニコニコ笑いながら、黙って私達の話を聞いていた。

（解答例）He listened to us talking, smiling, not saying a word.

10、2週間後、捜索隊（a search party）はテントの下に、互いに暖め合おうとしているような感じ（as if <as though>）で体を寄せ合っている、彼等の死体を発見した。

（解答例）Two weeks (あるいはA fortnight) later a search party found 

their bodies huddled together under their tent as though trying to keep each other warm.

11、あまりお待たせはしなかったでしょうね。

（解答例）I hope I haven’t kept you waiting too long.

12、汽車は行楽の人達（holiday-makers）で混み合っており、僕等はずっと立ち通しでした。

（解答例）The train was crowded with holiday-makers and we were 

kept standing all the day.

13、僕は時折、近くの川に釣りに行きます。

（解答例）Sometimes I go fishing in a river close by.

（参考）Where do you go fishing?

14、議論などをして、もうこれ以上、時間をつぶすのは止めにしよう。

（解答例）Don’t let’s waste any more time arguing.

15、その少年を救おうとして、僕も危うく土左衛門（水死体のこと）になるところでした。

（解答例）I was nearly drowned trying to rescue the (little) boy.

16、仮に酔っていたとしても（granting that･･･）、それは君の行為の言い訳にはなりません。

（解答例）Granting that you were drunk, that is no excuse for your 

conduct (あるいはthe way you behaved).

17、本当を言えば、彼が君にではなく、君が彼にわびるべきです。

（解答例）Properly speaking, you ought to apologize to him, not he to 

you.

18、学生があまり騒いで（make so much noise that…）いたので、先生は声を通らせることができなかった。

（解答例）The students were making so much noise (あるいはdin) that 

the teacher could not make himself heard.

19、誰かが私をじっと見ている（staring at）のを感じて、私は振り返った。

（解答例）①Feeling somebody staring at me, I turned around.

②I turned around, feeling somebody staring at me (あるいはsomebody’s eyes on my back).

20、彼等は顔を怒りにゆがめて（contorted with anger）、互いににらみ

（glare）合って立っていた。

（解答例）They stood glaring at each other, their faces contorted with 

anger.

21、秋田行の最終列車は出てしまい、タクシーも拾えないので、秋田までの3マイルの道のりを歩かねばならなかった。

（解答例）The last train for Akita having left and there being no taxis 

available, I had to walk the (distance of) three miles to the city.

22、呼吸する際の肺の活動（motion）は自動的である。肺が1分間に約18回の割合で新しい空気を取り入れ、使用済みの空気を外に出しながら、その運動は自律的に（by itself）続けられる（goes on）のである。

（解答例）The motion of our lungs as we breathe is automatic. It goes on by itself, the lungs taking fresh air in and letting used air out about 

eighteen times a minutes.

【参考用基本文例】心得ておくべき「分詞」の用法

１、成長期の子供は、ああしろとかするなと指図されるのを好まない。

Growing children do not like to be told what to do and what not to do.

（解説）名詞の後に置けるのは便利至極です。

All the men working in his factory are physically handicapped in one 

way or another.

２、不測の事態は決まって起こるもの。

The unexpected always happens.

３、犬は一晩中吠え続けていた。

The dog kept barking all night.

４、事柄によっては言わぬが花です。

Some things are better left unsaid.

（参考）There are some things which are better (あるいはhad better be) left unsaid.

これはwhich we had better leave unsaidとも言えます。

５、昨夜、君が寝言を言っているのを聞いたぞ。

I heard you talking in your sleep last night.

６、バスが角を曲がって来たなと思った次の瞬間、その子のひかれるのが目に映った。

I saw the bus coming round the corner, and the next moment I saw the child run over.

（参考）I just can't bear to see animals cruelly treated.

７、何か外国語で自分の言うことを相手に分からせることができますか。

Can you make yourself understood in any foreign language?

（参考）I had to shout to make myself heard above the traffic noises.

８、検眼して眼鏡をかけなくっちゃいけないんじゃない、君。

I'm afraid you'll have to get you eyes tested for glasses.

９、どうも眠い。昨夜遅くまで本を読んで起きていたんでね。

I feel rather sleepy. I sat up reading till late last night.

（参考）I'm in a big hurry. I haven't got time to stand here arguing with you.

10、今日の午後は買い物に出かけます。

I shall go out shopping this afternoon.

（参考）He doesn't go about telling his troubles.

11、いつもいつも稼ぐのに忙しく、そうした本を読む暇が今まで無かった。

I have always been too busy earning my living to read books of that 

kind.

12、それが頭について夜眠れないんだ。

I can't sleep at night thinking of it.

（参考）I can hardly sleep for thinking about you.

13、彼の父は彼が九つの時に結核で死んで、一家は無一文の状態に置かれたのです。

When he was nine, his father died of tuberculosis, leaving (あるいはand left) the family penniless.

14、何と言ってよいのか分からないので、黙っていた。

I remained silent, not knowing what to say.

15、手紙を書き上げると、投函しにあたふたと出かけていった。

Having written his letter, he hurried out to post it.

16、こんなに物価が上がっていくのでは、僕の給料では食っていけない。

I can't live on my wages with prices going up the way they are.

（解説）with prices what they areとも言えます。

17、人生は短いし、静かな時間はそうないのだから、くだらぬ本を読んで時間を浪費してはいけない。

Life being very short, and the quiet hours of it few, we ought to waste none of them in reading worthless books.

18、というわけで、顛末の一部始終は彼には話さぬ方が無事だと考えたのです。
