【本問題】次の日本文を英訳して下さい。
１、カナダでは何語を使いますか。
（解答例）What language is spoken (あるいはdo they speak) in Canada?
２、その本は易しい英語で書かれており、おもしろい話やきれいな絵がいっぱい載っています。
（解答例）The book is written in simple English, and is full of interesting stories and beautiful pictures.

（解答例）Just as English is taught besides Japanese in our junior high

４、日本の家屋はたいてい木造ですから、火事が出るとすぐ燃えます。（東北大学）

they burn easily.

５、彼は約束を必ず守るので、みんなに信用がある。
（解答例）He is trusted by everybody as he always keeps his word (あるいはpromise).
６、人間の身体はよくストーブにたとえられる。
（解答例）The human body is often compared to the stove.
（解説）be compared with～なら「～と比較される」の意です。stoveにtheをつけるのはThe cat（ネコってやつは） loves comfort.の場合と同じです（総称表現）。
７、「おっそろしくガサツな奴なんだ。」「気にかけるなよ（don’t take any notice of）。生まれつきなんだから。」
（解答例）”He’s (so) terribly rude.” “Don’t take any notice of him. He
was born rude (あるいはthat way).”

10、去年の入学試験は3月末でしたが、今年は4月初めに行われます。
（解答例）Last year the entrance examination of our school was given

17、万年筆を例に取ってみよ。ペンとインキは文明のほとんど初めから使われて（be employed）いた。しかし、発明者がこの2つを結びつけることを思いついた（hit on the idea of～ing）のは、幾百年も経ってからであった。
（解答例）Take, for instance, the fountain-pen. Pen and ink have been
employed (あるいはin use) almost from the beginning of civilization, but hundreds of years had had to pass before an inventor (あるいはa clever person) hit on the idea of combining the two.
【参考用基本文例】「受身形」のいろいろ
１、子供の性格はその家庭環境から多大の影響を受けるのであります。
A child's character is greatly influenced by his home environment.
２、すぐれた教育の価値は金銭では量れるものではありません。
The value of a good education cannot be measured in (terms of)
money.
３、あの人は誰からもよく言われます。
He is well spoken of by everybody.

４、私達の乗った汽車は大雪のため3時間ほど遅れました。
Our train was delayed some three hours by the heavy snowfall.
５、微積分の試験に不正行為をしたために彼は学校からおっぽり出された。
He was kicked out of school for cheating on a calculus examination.
６、この家は建ててから何年ぐらいになりますか。
How many yeas (long) ago was this house built?
（解説）How old is this house?とも言えます。
７、ペニシリンを発見したのは何という人ですか。
By whom was penicillin discovered?
８、仕事は今週末までには仕上がるでしょう。予定より5日早く。
The work will be finished by the end of this week, five days ahead of
schedule.
９、不可能事は古来、しばしばそれを不可能とは知らぬ人達によって成されてきた。
Impossible tasks have often been accomplished by people who did not know that they were impossible.
