【本問題】次の日本文を英訳して下さい。

１、Fowler氏夫妻の他にどなたが見えるのですか。

（解答例）Who else is coming besides the Fowlers?

２、どなたをお待ちになっているのですか。

（解答例）Who are you waiting for?

（参考）Who are you going to write to?

３、いかがお過ごしですか。

（解答例）①How are you getting on (あるいはalong).

４、君、まだあのことを気にしているんだろう、違う？

（解答例）You’re still worrying about that, aren’t you?

５、私どもは当地で愉快にやって（have a good time）おります。

６、2年後の私はどこにいて、何をしていることだろう。

（解答例）Where shall I be and what shall I be doing two years hence?

７、この夏休みにはどこへお出かけですか。

（解答例）Where are you going for your holidays this summer?

８、「あなたは用事が済むとすぐにお帰りになりますか。」

９、私が今まで君から受けたような仕打ち（the kind of treatment I have 

received at your hand）に、これからも我慢するだろうと考えたら大間違いだ。そのつもりはない。

（解答例）If you think I am going to put up with the kind of treatment I have received at your hand, you are greatly mistaken. I’m not.

（解説）もちろん、going to put up with itが了解されています。

10、どちらにお出かけですか。

11、彼が何をしているか、行って見てきなさい。

（解答例）Go and see what he is doing?

12、新聞を読んでいたら、父に呼ばれた。

（解答例）I was reading a newspaper, when (my) father called me.

13、父が入って来た時、私は数学の問題を解こうと、部屋の中を行きつ戻りつしていました。

（解答例）When (my) father came in, I was walking about (あるいは

pacing up and down) the room trying to work out a problem in 

mathematics.

14、空は晴れ上がって、道路に積もった雪が朝日にきらきらと輝いていた。

（解答例）The sky had cleared and the snow (lying) on the road was 

glittering in the morning sun.

15、だいぶお待ちになりましたか。

（解答例）Have you been waiting long?

16、勉強し過ぎが続くと、とかくイライラしてくる（become nervous）ものだ。

（参考）I’m afraid you have been overworking lately.

（解答例）①A person who has been overworking (himselfは省略) is 

likely to become nervous.

②If you have been overworking, you are apt to become nervous.

17、よく眠れないんです、近頃ずっと。

（解答例）I haven’t been sleeping well lately.

18、「一日中何をしていたのです。」「ものを読んだり書いたりしておりました。」

（解答例）”What have you been doing (with yourself) all day? ”

”I have been reading and writing.”

19、水を1杯くれないか。息が切れ（be out of breath）た。走ってきたんだよ。

（解答例）Give me a glass of water, will you? I’m out of breath. I’ve 

been (あるいはcome) running.

20、この1週間というもの、雨が小止みなく降り通しだ。

（解答例）It has been raining steadily for a week.

【参考用基本文例】大切な「進行形」の用い方

１、陰で皆が君のことを笑っているよ。

Everybody is laughing at you behind your back.

２、奴、僕のすることに一々ケチばかりつけやがる。

He is always finding fault with everything I do.

（解説）そうした行為の反復を不快と感じての「進行形」です。

（参考）He always finds fault with everything I do.

３、どうも今夜は一荒れやって来そうだぜ。

I'm afraid we're going to have a storm this evening.

４、いずれまた近い中にお会いすることになりますよね。

We shall be seeing each other again soon, I hope.

（解説）よほどのことが無い限り、実現まず「確実」と考える場合の言い方です。

When will you be returning?

それを「確定」と決めた言い方が次例です。

I am leaving in a couple of days.

（参考）"Perhaps," she said, "I shall see you again before long."

５、急ごうよ。彼が駅で待っているだろうから。

Let's hurry. He'll be waiting at the station.

（解説）次例と同じく、現在のある事柄に対する「推測」を示します。

This will be the book you 're looking for, I think.

６、太陽は地平線に沈みかけていた。

The sun was sinking below the horizon.

７、ジョン、今までどこにいたんです。人にさんざん探し回らせておいて。

John, where have you been all this while? I have been looking for you 

everywhere.

８、「ひどく疲れた顔をしているね。」「そうか、近頃、よく眠れないんだ。」

"You are looking awfully tired." "Am I? I haven't been sleeping well (あるいはmuch) lately."

（解説）You look tired. = You have a tired look.よりも、その瞬間受ける「その状態の継続」感が進行形を取らせます。また、haven't been sleepingはそうした状態が続いて来たし、これからも続く見込みなのです。

（参考）I haven't slept very well for the last few nights.

９、明日でまる一周間降り続いたことになる。

It will have been raining a whole week tomorrow.

10、その頃、数日にわたって過労が続いていたのです。

I had been overworking myself for days past.
