英作文演習～予備編①「自動詞と他動詞」

【本問題】次の日本文を英訳して下さい。

１、彼の交友範囲は広い（狭い）。

（解答例）He has a wide (a narrow) circle of friends.

２、つれない（unkind）言葉は人を傷つける。

（解答例）Unkind words wound.

３、あの先生はいつもクラスの5分の2（two-fifths）は落第させる（fail）。

（参考）What should I do if I fail in the examination?

（解答例）The teacher always fails two-fifths of his class.

４、僕の時計は12時19分です。

（解答例）My watch says twelve-nineteen.

５、あの方はよく存じ上げております。

（解答例）①I know him very well.　

②I am personally acquainted with him.

６、犬は嗅覚（sense of smell）が鋭い。

（解答例）Dogs have an acute sense of smell.

（解答例）My watch has gone wrong. It doesn’t keep time. It loses as 

much as half an hour (あるいはthirty minutes) a day.

（ヒント）「火災（fires）」を主語とする。

【参考用基本文例】「自動詞か他動詞か」

１、君は神の存在を信じるか。

Do you believe in God?

僕の言葉を信じないなら、彼に聞いてみたまえ。

Ask him if you don't believe me.

２、あなたに謝らなければなりません。

I must apologize to you.

I owe you an apology.

（解説）他動詞のうちでも、envy, forgiveの類はおもしろい目的語の取り方をします。共に直接目的語で第二の目的語が「何についてか」を教えるのです。

I do not envy them (their life).

I cannot forgive them (their cruelty to animals).

He accused me of telling lies.

３、「昨晩はおもしろかったかい。」「ええ、とても愉快でした。」

"Did you have a good time last night?" "Yes, I enjoyed myself very 

much."

４、彼の病気はすっかり直りました。

He has recovered completely from his illness.

彼はすっかり健康を回復しました。

He has fully recovered his health.

５、君はラジオを聞くことがありますか。

Do you ever listen to the radio?

歯はまだお痛みになりますか。

Does your teeth still pain you?

６、一生は一度しかない。

We have only one life to live.

We only live once.

（参考）We are only young. Let's be young while we are still young.

７、なぜ、あんなに怒ったの？

What made you so angry?

（参考）Why is he so late? What is keeping him?（何で手間取っているのだろう。）

どうぞお楽になさって、お好きなもの何でも召し上がれ。

Please make yourself at home and help yourself to anything you want.

君ならきっと立派な教師になっていくよ。

You will surely make a good teacher.

（解説）この場合のmakeはbecome by development or trainingの意味。次の２例はperform the part of function ofの意味ですが、prove, turn outの感じが強いです。

She will make him a good wife.（彼にとってよい奥さんと）

He will hardly make us a good neighbor.（うちのよき隣人とはちょっとなりそうもないね。）

８、何週間か過ぎ、何か月か過ぎたが、依然、彼からは何の音沙汰も無かった。

Weeks passed and then months, and I still heard nothing from him.

Weeks passed and then months, but still no letters came from him.
