「Watch Out For Resume Red Flags」
It has never been more important to know who you are hiring than now. A hiring agent should review every application, resume, and cover letter with thorough due diligence. Candidates must have the skills that they claim that they have, and they must be who they say they are. In today’s slow market, every organization needs to be efficient and competitive to turn over a profit. This means that your hires need to really count, especially in a small organization. A hiring agent should take hiring very seriously, and that begins with the resume, cover letter, and application review.

Every employer/hiring agent should be diligently looking for resume red flags. If an employer chooses to ignore a red flag, then they could be putting their company at risk. Red flags may indicate that the potential hire is not who they say they are, and they may not be qualified for the job you are trying to fill. Other times, the red flag only warrants the need for clarification.

There are some red flags which one should not overlook, and a good agent should consider them in the context of the candidate’s entire career and their experience. There are times that a red flag is really a reflection of their circumstances: the current market conditions, the candidate is following bad advice they received, or even that the candidate is desperate to stand out. It is best to question and analyze any details that may be missing or unclear from the resume. If the candidate is lying on their resume, then that is unacceptable. An employer would be wise to avoid candidates who are not honest.

Long Employment Gaps with Empty Experience.

Almost everyone has some gaps in their resume, and they can be due to bad market conditions, cutbacks, illness, death in the family, self-employment, starting a business etc. These gaps are to be expected in a regular candidate’s application. The red flag in an employment gap are long periods of no activity at all. These candidates should be questioned further to discover what this gap was due to. Last thing you want is for that candidate to have a bad history from a previous employer.

Another red flag is if the candidate’s work experience on their resume only includes the years that they worked at a job. The resume should at least indicate the months that the candidate was employed. Again, this should be more carefully examined.
