"Compromise" という厄介な単語

"Compromise" ＝妥協する

と暗記したのに、アメリカドラマなどを見ていると、compromiseの字幕に、

「体面を傷つける(His reputation has been compromised.)

「データ漏洩（セキュリティ侵害）」(the credit data seems to have been compromisedなど)

が当てられている事も多いです。

語源を見ると、com (共に)/ pro（前に） / mis（送る）

→相手に合わせる→自分の主張を100％は通さない＝妥協する　

となり、「妥協する」については比較的スムーズに理解できそうです。

しかし「傷つける、侵害」については、上記の語源とどうリンクしたら良いのでしょうか・・・。

compromise the immune system　免疫システムが侵害された

Confidential information was compromised.機密情報が漏洩した

His reputation has been compromised.名声が傷つけられた

compromised patient 免疫不全の患者

・・・例文を見ても良くわかりません。

Merriam Webster Dictionary での関連する箇所では、

a. 敵の危険に晒す

b. 一部が損傷して正常に機能しない状態に陥らせる

c. 不信の目に晒す

などの説明が出ています（和訳しています）。

まだcom (共に)/ pro（前に） / mis（送る）に繋がりませんね...。

It comes from the Latin compromissus (past participle of compromittere), meaning “to make a mutual promise to accept an arbiter’s decision” (com = together; promise = promise). In the 1500s, the meaning of the word evolved to include the process of making the mutual promise, the back-and-forth process of negotiation by mutual concessions (without an arbiter). In the 1690s, a negative spin was added, suggesting that to be “compromised” included being “expose[d] to risk or hazard, endanger[ing] the reputation of [the compromised person].”

◆第二段階（1500年代）：度重なる交渉も含む、約束（妥協とほぼ近い感じですね）

◆第三段階（1690年代）：第二段階のネガティブな面（譲歩）が強調（悪い意味も少し追加）され、結果的に「リスク、損害、危険に晒される」となったようです。
