【本問題】次の日本文を英訳して下さい。

１、「彼が今日、来るってのは確かかい。」「来るかどうか、あぶないものだよ。」

（解答例）”Is it certain that he will come today?” ”It is doubtful whether he is coming.”

２、群集の中にいる時ほど孤独な時はない、と昔からよく言われている。

（解答例）It has often been said that a man is never so lonely as when (he is) in a crowd.

（解説）solitude in multitudeなどと言います。

３、どうも彼から風邪をもらったようです。

（解答例）It seems that I (have) (あるいはI seem to have) caught cold 

from him.

４、私が誤っていたことが判明しました（turn out）。

（解答例）It turned out that I was wrong.

５、君が買いたいというのは何という辞書ですか。

（解答例）What dictionary is it (that) you want to buy?

６、泣かないようにしている（to keep from weeping）のが精一杯（all I 

could do）でした。

（解答例）It was all I could do to keep from weeping.

（参考）”Well, all I can say is (あるいはI can only say) that I did my 

best.”

７、北から刺すような（piercing）風が吹いていて、外は凍るような

（freezing(ly)）寒さだった。

（解答例）It was freezing(ly) cold outside, with a piercing wind blowing from the north.

８、明日もまた暑くなると僕は思うがね。

（解答例）I think it is going to be (あるいはwe are going to have) 

another hot day tomorrow.

９、今年の冬は例年になく暖かでした。（京都工芸繊維大学）

（解答例）It has been unusually warm this winter.

10、今晩は風がひどく吹きそうです。

（解答例）It will blow very hard (あるいはbe very windy) tonight, I am 

afraid.

11、日毎に暖かくなってきました。桜が咲くのも間近でしょう。

（解答例）It has been (あるいはis) getting warmer day by day. It will 

not be long before the cherry-trees put forth their blossoms.

12、今朝起きた時にはひどく曇っていましたから、きっと雨だと思いましたが、結局、上天気になりました。

（解答例）When I got up this morning, it was so cloudy that I thought it would surely rain, but it has turned out (to be) fine after all.

13、11時を打っている。もう寝る時間だ。

（解答例）Listen, it is striking eleven. It is time (for us) to go to bed.

（解説）It is time we went to (あるいはwere in) bed.と言ってもよいです。

（参考）“John, don’t you think it is about time we started?”（もうそろそろ）

“Things will soon take a turn for a better.”

“It is about time they did.”

“It is high time that something (should) be done about it.”

14、悔やんでももう遅い。

（解答例）It is too late to regret.

（参考）Even now it is not too late.（今からでも遅くはない。）

15、「今日は何曜日ですか。」「水曜日です。」

（解答例）”What day of the week is it (today)?” “It is Wednesday.”

（参考）”What day of the month is it? (あるいはWhat’s the date 

today?)” ”It is April 1.”（「今日は何日ですか？」「4月1日です。」）

16、もう日も入った。とても肌寒い。僕ら戻った方がいいな。きっとそろそろ夕飯時だぜ。

（解答例）The sun is (gone) down (あるいはhas set). It is quite chilly. 

We had better get back. It must be nearly supper time.

17、まだお昼には少し間があるのよ。もうおなかが減ったの？

（解答例）It isn’t nearly noon yet. Are you hungry already?

（解説）yetとalreadyの用法に留意です。

18、12月に入ってしばらくすると、子供達はクリスマスまであと幾日と、指折り数え出します。

（解答例）When December is a few days old, children begin to count 

how many days it is until Christmas.

【参考用基本文例】知らないと困るItの用法②

１、もうお前の寝る時刻だ。11時半だよ。

It's time (for you) to go to bed. It's half past eleven.

（解説）またはIt's time that you went (仮定法過去) to bed.

（参考）It is about time, we often hear people say, that a big 

earthquake should rock the Tokyo area.（もうそろそろあってもよい頃）

２、何をするにも今からでは遅すぎる。

It's too late now to do anything.

（参考）It's too early to predict which candidate will win.

３、えーと、今日は金曜だろう。明日は土曜ってことになる。

Eh, it's Friday today, isn't it? It'll be Saturday tomorrow.

（参考）It's my birthday tomorrow.＝Tomorrow is my birthday.

４、真相はまもなく判明いたしましょう。

It will not be long before we know the truth.

（解説）We shall know the truth before long.と言ってもよいです。

（参考）The truth will come out sooner or later.

５、「今日のお天気具合はどうだい。」「晴れそうです。」

"What's the weather like today?"＝"How is the weather today?" "It 

looks like clearing up."

６、気温がぐんと下がればこの雨はみぞれ、いやもしかしたら雪になるよ。

If it gets much colder, the rain will change to sleet or maybe to snow.

７、10月にしては少々寒いと思いませんか。

Don't you think it is rather cold for October?

(参考)New York is very hot in summer and very cold in winter.

This winter we have had very cold days in Tokyo.

８、あたりは暗くなり始めた。

It began to grow dark.

９、部屋の中はひっそりしていた。

It was very quiet in the room.

10、その年の9月はひどい月だった。3日に1日は雨降りでね。

It was bad September that year, raining one day in three.
